I wonder if Rusty knows :D?

I think Carver had the patent for the Sunfire Tech and Advent used it for sales.
Their subs were downward firing and yes, location was not important.
I paid quite a bit for that one almost 25 years ago. The caps gave out and I didn't think it would be worth replacing them. (I wish I would have now)

Yer in another league :)...

I had a 5.1 setup for movies .... used it one time .... just for grins ;).

My speakers will handle the 20-20K range .... and I'm strictly a 2 channel, music guy too....

Mebbe Rusty can fix yer Advent (Sunfire) sub ... he nose stuff :D

It depends on what you want to achieve. For a realistic soundstage it is important to have main speakers well positioned. For deep bass extension and for correcting/controlling room modes, location of subwoofers is key.

The issue whilst low frequencies are (in the simplest of terms) somewhat omnidirectional room modes cannot be ignored.

If you are looking to have the room shake for explosions, etc. Yes go for a corner placement, it will probably give you the most bass energy BUT the frequency curve of the low frequencies could be (most certainly will be) all over the place.

It's gone...I sold it on CL for $20

If you look to the left and right of the low frequency towers of my IRS Beta, there are Cambridge Soundworks for mid/high, there are 10" woofers on the floor behind them and on the right rear corner there is a Sub and the other one is behind the couch on the left wall. There is a Snell center channel under the projector, Snell side speakers (visible on the left of the photo) and rears are Cambridge with a rear center Cambridge.

Movies are powered by a Lexicon preamp with Sherbourn amps (10 channels at 250w each!), also a Denon AVR. Music duties are through an Allnic preamp, Manley Snappers on the mid/high and Threshold 12e on the bass towers.

I'm room response with the Betas is down to 12 hz!

oh........ I had a Sunfire tech redo the plate amps (both developed motorboating).

I recently recapped the crossovers on the Betas. They have been making beautiful music since 1998

Are those acoustic panels on the ceiling?

Very nice system....I'm sure it sounds fantastic!

Mine died after a voltage surge caused by a bad common bus connection in my breaker box. After that was fixed, the sub would only emit a loud hum when plugged in.

Yes panels hanging off the ceilings, membrane traps on the 4 corners, abfussors on first and second reflections on sides, large quadratic diffusers on the back wall and a couple of ASC Tube Traps to fine tune bass.

EDIT: you can see one fo the Sunfires in the corner

Quite the set-up....lots of reasons to be proud of that.
Jealous I am.

^^^I'm positive the awesome sound your system produces would be lost to my tinnitus suffering ears.
I'd love to get a listen to that system.

Not a good recording from my iPhone but it gives you an idea. I had the bass gain a bit high for this particular album which is bass heavy.

Nice setup. I love the corner traps. I'll bet this room sounds great.

(Paul over at PS Audio in Colorado has a pair of IRSV for sale, and I think your room could accommodate them nicely.)

Here's a link to a very poor recording I made with my Sony A7ii camera demonstrating my system with a cassette tape I made a long time ago.

Thanks. Paul and his team are a great resource. They made the Servo Controllers for Infinity way back when. His IRS Vs (nor his Betas) are not for sale SmileWavy ...

The V's are visually stunning and sound "exquisite". There is no replacement for displacement.

Beautiful! The Column II were/are interesting because of the dual woofers and for Infinity aficionados are an oddity since they don't have EMITs or EMIMs but they have a couple of sweet (Motorola) tweeters.

Congrats. Collector's pieces right there.

Have you recapped the crossovers?

Scott Douglas 02-29-2024 01:30 PM

No I have not recapped the crossovers. I did refoam the woofers and mids.
They've been in constant use for a long time. I'm the original owner having bought them in @1978 or so.

I found that all of the Solen branded capacitors on mine were off spec. The Wondercaps measure perfectly on spec

Your system is in a whole 'nuther universe .... I'd love to hear it too :).

Way back when, I had 4 Carver amps (bridged mono at 1000 watts each) driving my 4 vintage Polk SDAs in 2-channel mode....

A poor man's "House of Sound" .... it rocked :D

Huh ... what ;)?
