Before the answer comes from one of our mates down under, consider that "Aussies rarely pronounce 'r' unless it's at the start of the syllable."

I'm guessing it would be soldah. Where that quote goes wrong though is when Lee Diffy says Honder.

I was wondering because of the L or no L sound that you mentioned a few posts back. #36

I always wondered about the spelling of Wednesday. Why have a silent D in there?

I remember a discussion with a buddy about ptomaine poisoning. We tried to look it up in the dictionary but we could not find it as we did not know the P was silent. I finally just called me then fiancé, knowing she was an English major for how to spell it. This was long before the internet. 32 years of marriage later, I don't need to use google for spelling.

Us Kiwi boys say solder, and yes, Australians say soldah.

What always seemed weird to me was Lieutenant.

The British say lef-TEN-ənt, not Loo ten-ant.

It's also weird that they spell it "gaol" instead of "jail". It's like we Americans fixed that weird spelling, but there are thousands of other words with weird spelling that we left alone. We also changed "kerb" to "curb" for no apparent reason.

Shed-uall because it drives the wife crazy

stevej37 03-06-2024 05:13 PM

Whenever I hear it as shed-uall...I think the person saying it believes it's a new word.:)
