Car value Retention?

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2008-ford-mustang-bullitt-62/

Pretty good on this one, considering that I paid $30,075 for my '09. That was in April of '09, new, licensed & out the door.

However, this price is not even an inflation hedge. But considering that consumer reports says any car retaining 50% of it's value after five years is doing well, not a bad retention. Far better than most cars, worse only to a lofty few. To me, shows the folly of thinking one can pick a new future collectable. Showing my age, but I remember when the 356 Speedster was the "entry level" Porsche.

Why did you not drive it?

It is a shame that car was not driven more, as Ford intended.

Car like that is a depreciating asset, not an investment.

The one in the ad wasn't his. Different year.

That's not my car...mine is an '09 with 32,000 miles...

(edit) But even the "lofty few" aren't really investments. You have to maintain the car, insure it, store it, etc. Compared to a nice no load index fund, the return on any car isn't that great. That's the point...buy what you like because you like it, but don't consider it an investment. I have a hellofa time keeping a straight face whenever a car salesman says a car is a "great investment".

(edit again) Here's a video of a poor Brit...the other end of it...a Porsche "behind book" rant. Video lifted from a post on PARF.

Says you joined in 2005. Must not read the OT forum much. :D

If it's about a Mustang or pool, chances are Paul is in on it.

It’s always someone else’s fault, isn’t it?
No one held a gun to this ahole’s head or “shoved it down his throat” and made him buy the car. He had other options.
He didn’t do his research, didn’t assess whether the car met his lifestyle needs, but apparently, maybe, (assuming he’s not just an internet “influencer” posing as a car owner) he went ahead and bought it anyway. If he wanted a 911 he should have bought one instead of experimenting with an electric.

I've got a habit of looking at comments as I 'watch' YouTube and I'm glad I do. It took this knob 21 1/2 minutes out of this 28 minute video to get to the point*. I have no sympathy for someone who doesn't realize that modern cars are disposable domestic appliances. Especially cutting-edge luxury EV's.

• The Taycan he paid 120,000 Pounds-sterling for is now obsolete and worth between 22,000 and 42,000 Pounds on the wholesale market and he's massively underwater.

pwd72s 03-14-2024 07:03 PM

Yep, he shoulda bought a Bullitt Mustang. :D

Actually, the value of my Mustang could go to zero and I wouldn't lose as much as this poor sap lost the second he left the dealership lot. But...he has the status of owning a Porsche and is "saving the planet" by going electric.
