Rear ended by idiot on his phone.

Just today, crawling along at about 10-15mph. I come to a stop and the idiot smacks me on my 987S. No real damage but a few scratches on the bumper and bent my muffler tips a bit. I am more pissed them anything else because he wasn't paying attention. There shouldn't be any real damage maybe just the foam underneath the bumper cover. I want to have the muffler or tips looked at. It a factory Cayman R exhaust so that cost me a few bucks.

My question is, how am I suppose to know if the shop use good paint or done the right prep? I had work done before on my truck when a tree branch hit my hood and the paint is just ****, pitted within a couple years. This is a nationwide auto body chain recommended by my insurance company. I like to make sure the muffler or exhaust is in good shape and not bang up and pushed in. The tips have been pushed in and is no longer straight like it was. I don't think the insurance adjuster will pay for that and maybe he thinks it can be bend back. It was 4000.00 for the exhaust not including labor and I no longer have receipt to proof it . What to do and where to go?

That sucks, Jeff.

Hopefully you'll get the advice you need from the Pelican brain trust.

My experiences with trying to navigate insurance claims and coverages is harder than trying to understand quantum theory.....I guess the key is having the right agent help you....and even that isn't going to guarantee anything!

Screw the shop recommended by your ins co. Ask the locals (PCA and other Porsche folks) about recommended shops in your area and use them.

If it’s scratched they’ll replace it. This works well with aluminum framed motorcycles that get scratched or dented as it’ll be a total 9/10 times.
Insurance will like used parts more than likely. You can try to give a receipt for anything and they’ll either work with you or not.

He’ll be lucky to get that. The big insurance companies use internal calculators to determine pay out costs and will just send a check.

Not in CA. He gets to pick the shop and the insurance company and the shop have to hammer it out.

Take the car to Paulee on LaCienega and leave it there. They are absolute magicians and expensive AF. Good luck!

Having gone through this in December with a younger kid on his phone hitting me at a red light without even hitting his brakes, it ended up being a pretty painless process. Thankfully I was not in my Porsche.

I was able to choose the shop that did the work and I did a lot of work researching and went and "interviewed" them first. I made sure all of the parts were new and OEM. The kids car dove under the back of mine so there really was not a ton of visible damage but there was a bit under the car, and the shop found a bit more when they tore it apart.

My biggest delay was the shop getting the parts, so I was without it for a 3 months.

You may have some issues getting them to pony up for the aftermarket parts. I know on my motorcycles I have given the insurance company the value of the upgrades etc.

Go to your Porsche dealer and see who they recommend.

FYI, I was in a parking lot and a lady reversed out of her stall and backed into my 987. Put a dimple in my front bumper. Her husband was an insurance investigator for State Farm and he gave me a hard time about the accident. He asked me if there was any cameras in the parking structure. I told him I'd have to look. Went back and saw a camera right above the accident site. He said he would like to see it. Crickets from him afterwards and State Farm ok'd whatever repairs were needed.

Fast forward and the body shop said my bumper was repaired before and they couldn't straighten it out good enough. When I bought the car, the rt ft corner of the bumper was pushed in and I had it fixed. So I needed a whole new bumper cover. Then there was a chunk that came off the Litronic headlight, so that headlight assembly had to be replaced. $5k total cost. lol

Come and think of it, I wonder if the dealer or their body shop can give me an estimate for the Cayman R exhaust including labor? Then again, they are independent shop that has nothing to do with Porsche dealers. When I smacked the valence on my 930, my indy porsche shop recommended that I go to this Ferrari specific shop in the Valley to do the work. They sucked, big time. It was expensive too but the insurance pick up the tab and they negotiated a price to have the valence and fog lights fixed.

Sympathies to you Jeff. At least you weren't hurt and things can be fixed.

It sounds like Dennis has a good recommendation. Good luck.

Don't know if you can call it being sideswiped at only 1-2 mph while inching along at a rush-hour light regulated freeway on-ramp, but a Beeatch while on a phone tapped (and folded back) her drivers side mirror into the side of my Hard-to-see 3/4 ton long bed Metallic Blue Ram 2500 truck. {insert Rolls Eyes Here}

Literally at 1-2 mph she folded back her mirror against my paint with us 2 cars merging. The people behind her must of been entertained for a good 2-3 minutes watching the Two of us collide like 2 snails.

She dropped back and took a photo of my plate. Heck we're stopped anyway at the on-ramp light so I get out and go back to her, and unfold her side mirror to straight. She stares straight ahead and doesn't roll the window down. I shrug and say "Sorry" and left. 1/2 hour later get a call from the State Patrol wanting my side of the story. While giggling, I told him the story and he laughed too. So she scratched up her black 2023 mirror in a couple places all because she couldn't merge properly at 2 mph.

My neighbor just went through his with his Taco. The insurance company assigned it 50/50 responsibility!

My wife was rear ended in my '88 Carrera. The insured was with Allstate. I got a good check to fix the car but after getting an attorney involved got nothing for my wife. She ended up having to have neck surgery 1.5 years later after much suffering. Too late to relate that to the incident.

Her foot was on the clutch inspite of me telling her to not hold the clutch in while stopped. Her foot slipped off the clutch on impact and that sprained her back somewhat. Didn't hurt for a day and wasn't too bad. The neck thing showed up gradually.

The impact was not great but it did warp the quarter panel up near the rear side window. I sold the care after that.

If anyone hits me even slightly I'm getting out, lying on the ground and the meat wagon can take me to the emergency. I'm that pissed at the ins cos. You just don't realize the extent of all damages at the time. So take your time!
