My last job was in the Persil factory (Unilever) so I'm biased towards Persil and use Persil. Haha, probably because I've still got a whole lot of nearly free stuff in the attic.

However... Vanish is a far superior product.

A friend who fixes laundry washing machines and dishwashing machines says DON'T use plant based detergents as they stick to the inside of the pipes and pumps and kill the machine.

I do 2-3 loads per week, mostly fleece blankets that covered with aluminum and polish. Have tried them all and only Tide works well and even that doesn't get all the black polish marks from "cleaning" foam heads on a pneumatic mini-sander, hitting them spinning on the fleece.

Buy a cheap detergent that you like the smell of, or a cheap unscented detergent.

If you have stains add some Dawn to it, scrub it with a small brush, and run it with the rest of the load.

Unless you have a job where you get filthy every day, buying expensive stain removing detergent is a waste of money. I do a lot of 'hands on' work, and I rarely have a stain that Dawn can't remove.

If it wasn't for liquid Tide, I wouldn't have any clothes left. I pre-treat all of the black dirt from working on cars by poring the liquid Tide directly on the stains and using my fingernails to scratch it in/remove the mark. The jeans I'm wearing right now are perfectly clean, fresh Levi's that I could wear anywhere, (fancy restaurant, etc.), they have been black with auto dirt probably 100x. Same with my summer shorts, t-shirts, everything. I even wash my running shoes in the machine.

By the time I've pre-treated all of the stains and marks in the load of laundry, usually there is nothing left to pour into the little compartment on the machine. I start the machine and of course it all mixes in with the water and everything comes out great. I wear coveralls now for mechanical work and they get dirty fast. I cannot even begin to imagine how a pod or powder detergent would accomplish this, even powder Tide.

As a bonus, my fingernails get cleaned and they are always dirty.

I second that!!! Any time I get a little oil stain on some jeans or shirt, I put a little dawn on the spot and scrub with a fingernail brush and wash in the machine. Usually after just one washing, the stain will be gone.

All dish soap is formulated to cut grease/oil (lots of foods are greasy/oily). So any dish soap should be good at getting oil/grease out of clothes. I think you can also pre-treat with mechanic-style hand cleaner since it's also designed to cut oil and grease. Obviously, if it's full of pumice, that'll be adding that to your laundry.

I get what you guys are saying but I'm not pre-treating anything to save 10 cents per load of laundry. That's 30 cents a week for me or $15 for an entire year. For that, I'm just throwing fleece in the washer and pouring in some tide.

On Dawn, I add that to the Tide when washing the foam heads which soak for a week+ in a concentration Dawn solution in a big tray. Take them out, squeeze, throw in washer with Tide and some Dawn and they turn out like new.

It's not about money, it's about effectiveness. Dawn will remove stains that Tide and all the other detergents can't. At least not without pre-treating them.

. Got it. I have two kinds of pants. Ones for work, ones for everything else. The work pants have "patina," everything else just needs Tide to be perfectly clean. I guess that's where I'm coming from.

I'm the same. My cloths start as everyday wear and when my wife deems them gross they go into the drawer with work cloths.

For cleaning your hands after a filthy wheel bearing grease project, or oil change hot fluid running down your arm, these hand wipes are truly a miracle product.

I loved that . Mr Mom here... Ive been the sole laundry and dish cleaner for roughly 5 years now .
I use Arm and Hammer, mostly because its cheap, but it works good, and I like the way my sheets, and clothes smell .
I was happy to see its effective . I may not be as dumb as I look and sound

My Wife does all the laundry. She prefers Tide, OxiClean and now has switched to Kirkland's (Costco) version of Downy Pearls for fabric softener.

I'm not allowed anywhere near the laundry room except for this weekend to change out the belt and pulleys on the dryer which has started squeaking.

My Wife started out using powdered Tide and switched to liquid Wisk. After a couple of years, the washing machine stunk to high heaven until I disassembled it down to the drum and found the drum coated with gray stinky slime. Washed it out and went back to powdered Tide and have not had any problems like this since.
