Buying a new 80 gallon 2 stage 175 psi compressor

My 25 year old compressor of same specs is getting old and tired taking longer to top off tank and general in-use CFM run time.

otherwise compressor runs fine.

Looked into rebuild kits for my 2 stage pump, a new pump only, or new pump/motor combo to just change what's on top of my Tank now.

After considering all options and parts price and labor, I could just sell my whole used one and replace new for not much more.

Sorta Narrowed Choice down to 2 units:

https://www.lowes.com/pd/MEGA-Compressor-80-Gallons-Two-Stage-175-Psi-Vertical-Air-Compressor/5014405367

https://www.lowes.com/pd/CRAFTSMAN-80-Gallon-2-Stage-175-5HP-Stationary-Electric-Air-Compressor/5000045531

I want to keep it under $2K. It's just for my personal use not commercial.

Any other suggestions? Looked on Amazon, Ebay, Northern Tool, Compressor World, and other industrial sources.

Which do you suggest between my 2 choices and/or other units.?

Trust me, I won't blow off your answers (pun intended)

Like batteries, all consumer compressors are made by a few companies, Quincy is probably the only one that they make their own and is one of the best compressors, if not the best in this category.

I used a 5hp 17 cfm 80 gallon Dewalt (forget thje rea;l MFG but can find it) for 7 years for the company and we use air continuously. Ran it doggedly, I am honestly surprised it lasted 7 years. Replaced it with an Atlas Copco screw compressor that should last forever.

I would look at dB output as well as compressed air output.

Also, I should mention that I'm not inclined towards high pressure compressors but instead I'm more interested in CFM at 100 lbs.

I like 80 gallons but recovery time would be my next question. There's a lot more to the warrior than the shiny armor.

If you have Tractor Supply near you they stock Ingersoll Rand which are good quality and been around forever . And just as important all service parts are available .

Yes, Ingersoll Rand is beautiful stuff. Combine that with a nice new air filter...

Did you bother to clean the air filter and reed valves?

Ive been running an ingersol rand for roughly 10 years now. I had to replace the pressure switch once , other than that, it has been rock solid , daily use in a shop .

I bought a Puma almost 20 years ago and never had any problems. No leaks, no drama, nothing but years of great service. Change the oil once a year and knock the dust out of the filters. I replaced to drain plug with a 90-degree elbow and small valve and then screwed a clear plastic on and cut the tube so it drains into a used oil container.

For only $229 it'd be a cheap experiment and reuse my present 5 hp motor.

HF is probably OK for non commercial and that's even a bit biased as I think HF's 'rep' precedes them. They've up their game and prices and now sell some competing quality. Pays to investigate I would think. Old habits are hard to break.

A bit of a tangent...but anybody here ever used an auxiliary air tank in tandem with a compressor to achieve higher CFM's?

I've got a 30 Gal/175 PSI (Huskey) unit from H.D., which is fine for most of my uses (nail guns for home projects, etc.)...but very underwhelming for what I'd hoped would be a decent amount of air for engine (and other parts) cleaning using baking soda. Nope...and what a mess!

At any rate...I've heard of hooking up a relatively inexpensive aux. air tank for a bit of extra "oomph." Anyone tried this?

My dad did that 40 years ago using an old water heater tank . He had an industrial horizontal tank compressor and when doing something heavy duty he plugged it into the converted water heater tank . It worked great .

Nothing wrong with saving $$$ . Good luck with bringing it home they are heavy and top heavy . I have my IR on casters so I can move it by myself if needed .

Adding a 2nd air tank in parallel to a tank/pump is no different than adding a 2nd battery to a truck.

You get more Amp/Hr reserve, but no real apparent gains in power. Slower to draw down, but also takes longer to charge up.

Air Compressor or Battery, just think of them like a bank you exchange money with.

That's the same compressor as the one I got 8 years ago, I just have gauges and two outlets. It ran a bare minimum of 3 hours a day, every day, 5 days a week for 7 years before giving up the ghost. So it should last you forever. I am pretty sure it was made by Sanborn. I use it as an additional tank with the Atlas, it doesn't kick on as much.

For a bit more than Quincy money, go with Eaton -

If you want quiet, a screw compressor is the only way to go. Otherwise, a good 2 stage can provide the air pressure/cfm required, with some noise...

Cheers

I'd owned my tractor for 25 years before buying pallet forks for the bucket. Never thought I'd have a use for them. Bought a set and used them 3x a week seems like now.
