I don’t mind roundabouts. There is one just a few blocks from my house, I go through it all the time, a busy intersection and if it were a signalized intersection with left turn lanes etc, it would take a lot longer to get through it - instead you just yield, merge, and drive on. I’ve never seen an accident there (and I drive through it probably once a day on average for 18 years now) and it makes sense that any accidents would be side-swipe collisions instead of one 40 mph car t-boning or head-on into another. Not great for cyclists, although I have ridden through it often, you need to be pretty quick and assertive, and I can’t see any way for a little kid to safely cycle through it. There are cross walks, so crossing as a pedestrian is okay-ish, but I’d like to see a raised curb “pedestrian refuge” mid-crossing because, well, drivers.

Sure, residential, still fine. I think I've gone through one or two in a residential setting and it was fine as long as there are no stop signs. I guess in a residential setting, the goal could be to keep people from speeding.

I went to Aruba a few months ago and they are everywhere there. At first, I was not happy but after a few days of driving around there I found them to work amazing... The all have 2 or 3 lanes with dedicated turn lanes so if you see someone coming around in the middle lane, you dont even have to slow down when you merge in.. You rarely had to slow down ever.. They worked great there because everybody knew how to use them!

My first experience with a rotary (roundabout) was driving in Boston. Living in Chicago, this was my first experience and it didn't go well, After 3 attempts to get where I needed to be, I found that driving aggressively got me thru it. I pulled over just to calm my nerves. Since then, I get it - they work well if everyone can merge and yield.

Most experience drivers do the PCH traffic circle (what they call them here) pretty well. You do get some drivers that think they are flying a plane and need a 1000 feet separation. And then there are those that just take side streets to avoid the circle. There is an 'outer' circle with traffic lights, but it does not encircle the entire inner circle.

That English one would not make it here. It makes perfect sense from overhead, but drivers entering that from a driver's POV would freak the f**k out seeing other cars going in two directions. Drivers here are not smart enough to understand that.

I'm dead serious. No way would it EVER work.

Whenever driving in another state, I wonder why they haven't adopted the 'MI left turn'? (some have)
