Earthquake felt in NYC

Whole house shook for a few minutes. Don't know where it originates from. I have confirmation from all around the city

Yup my house just shook for about 12 seconds knocking shelf stuff around and an audible rumble. 4.8 Nothing by Cali standards but damn that was scary for jersey.0 My heart is still racing.

No. We had a coating overnight but it only stuck to the cars.

That was more like a bomb. Earthquakes here just roll on and on. Sometimes the rolling and jumping will toss things off shelves due to directional changes, but pictures hung fairly well seldom do anything but sway a little. There will be some rattling, but it's more like shaking and once in awhile it will shake a house off a foundation or topple a chimney that is not reinforced.

I'm not suggesting that it's a slow roll. Far from it. Usually there are many aftershocks and some can also be damaging.

The thing about quakes is that the nearer you are to the epicenter, the bigger they feel. It sounds like you are very close, therefore a 4.8 can feel like a 7.2 that’s a few hundred miles away.

I was 20 miles away from the epicenter of the 1994 Northridge earthquake, (6.7), it felt and sounded like a freight train coming through the house. Absolutely terrifying for several seconds, then it was over.

When I had my house in Fillmore during the Northridge quake we had a bit of damage. Lots of older homes came off of their foundation.

I helped a guy move some I beams as I was dumping a load of debris in one of the roll offs they had scattered around town. He had come down from Shaver Lake with his rig, rollers and jacks and the beams. That's all he did. Wait for a quake, come down and either charge $20-30k to replace the foundation or purchase the home for a song.

This was 1994 and he hadn't had to work since the Loma Prieta quake of 1989.

Yikes. That's not a good thing. The insurance companies are going to hugely up your premiums to cover future risks. And fixing an old brick building with a minor crack down one side is a very expensive business.

Lots of different ways that they can feel. WHen I was a kid, we lived in northern Japan twice, about 2.5 years both time. I'd say that we would feel shaking on avg every other week. (most of the time nearly imperceptible). We had a few that were bigger.

Some feel like shaking, some feel like waves, some feel like they are going up and down and some feel like they are going side to side.

I've spent time in Cali over the years and some time in the Seattle area, and have been a little surprised and disappointed that all that time I've never felt anything. I guess Cali doesn't have them as often as Japan did.
