Cutting Your Losses on New Tires

Was time for new shoes on the Wife’s RAV4 hybrid. Ditched Michelin for Pirelli Scorpions. Given the use of the RAV, got the AS Plus 3.

Love the grip, love the sound levels, love the sidewall. Been great in the wet. Very confident handling. Hopefully the tread life stands up as advertised.

So what are your losses on it? It seems like it is working well for you.

He just wants to be clever using a slightly altered title to mock another thread. I wish I could cut my tire losses. 15 YO Michelin Pilot Sports on the Boxster that are 3/4 to 7/8ths tread and even across.

I had a set of Hankooks on the 911. I was tempted to cut my losses and throw them out. I really didn't like them. A soft sidewall or something. They made the car feel a bit wishy washy on the twisties. But being a bit Scottish I couldn't bring myself to throw them out so I wore them out on the track practicing throttle steering and drifts.

I replaced them with Bridgestone Potenza R003 tires and I like them.

Bought a nice used E350 for the wife last year. The Craig's List ad said new tires, owner hyped them over the phone. Brand was Ziex. First thing I changed after driving the car home. Loud and squirmy, greasy. Went with Michelin Pilot all seasons, they transformed the car.

Ziex are Falken tires. Like most tires, they get noisy as they age. Probably new on the car, but not manufacture date.

During Covid, I needed tires for my BMW. Couldn't find anything, even on Amazon, except for some Fortuna tires. Bit the bullet and had them shipped here. They are actually nice and quiet. Haven't pushed them as the 535i is just a cruiser and only ever driven to the store. As opposed to 20 years ago, I don't think there are really bad tires these days.

I had some on my Corolla. I thought "What am I doing wrong, these tires are lasting forever."

I put those same Pirelli tires on the Lexus. Louder than the ZERO grip, 5 year old Yoko Geolanders they replaced. Good grip, would not notice the tires if the rest of the vehicle were not so freakishly quiet I would never have noticed. Improved greatly in wet and dry, like them 1000 miles in

When I bought my only new car, Acura Integra sedan, picked it up with 4 miles on it, had these Michelin tires on it, all season sport radials. Apparently it was specifically made for Honda, hopefully they got them cheap. They had a lot of tread left on them, at least half, when I ditched them Weak grip, but communicative, by which I mean, loud and squealing in corners, 4 wheel drift with a lot of noise on one of those big sweeper corners in the middle of nowhere Texas. Did everything poorly. Replaced them with Yokohama AVS intermediates, it was literally transformative. Braking was amazing, easy to modulate and would stick your gum to the windshield, barely engaged the ABS on dry pavement, great in the dry, good in the wet. High limits and progressively gave up grip. I miss that car

Those were my second choice.

Just haven’t been as happy with the last two sets of Michelins. Hadn’t bought Pirelli since the last set of P600s on my 280Z. Thought I’d giver a go.

I'm surprised, Falken makes a good tire. It's possible they were old but that would make them hard I think. They just didn't feel safe. Tires I never like to scrimp on, they are so important in braking and then of course ride and handling. Always get Pirelli, Bridgestone, Michelin for our daily's, have A008s on my Turbo with the glorious 245 rears. Someday I'll have to go to 17s.

I save on installation with new hires putting on the new tires.

Years ago, I tried some Hankooks on a miata. They were heavily recommended by folks all over the place for super grippy street tires. THey were HORRIBLE in the rain, but they didn't seem to have more grip than the tires that I'd been using that were great in the rain. I didn't wait until they worn out to replace them.

Another time I tried Yokohama ES100s (I think) that were also pretty heavily recommended street tires. They had pretty moderate grip compared to the other tires that I'd been using, so slid a lot and therefore wore faster. I didn't wait until they were worn out either.

Fortunately, in both cases, 15" miata tires were cheap.

I bought a 2015 Mazda6 and hated the tires. No excuse for those turds. Took it straight to America's Tires and got $50 each for them as trade-ins on some tasty Michelins. Hurt bad for a minute, felt good for a long time.

Very cute title.

Has been a theme for a while on Pelican. You do you....

Never bougt, sold or installed a Pirelli tire that I thought was better than any other offering. We never recommend, only sell and supply when a customer states they want a Pirelli XXX tire...

I put a set of Pirelli P4 All Season tires on our Nissan Quest many years ago, best tires ever!!! I also put the same on my daughter's Civic and they have been fantastic also. I got both sets at Sam's Club and got an 80 dollar rebate at the register on each set.

Well, you probably don’t work on many RAV4s I reckon.

I don't like Contis. Mom's BMW had Contis back in the day. She comes home and said something was wrong with her tire. Yeah, it was almost all off the rim because it was torn along the entire circumference. My Alfa had Contis and after 4 years, they started cracking. Just changed them to Goodyears and couldn't be happier.
