The JPL support team has been able to identify the exact IC Chip that failed. Operational status of the spacecraft has been determined and a reprogram effort is underway.
I have been to the Deep Space Network @ Goldstone, you look at that antenna and your eyes automatically drift to the sky. The folks there says everybody does that.

^^^^ Fortran77 was my first Comp. Science class in 1979 .... 370 Assembler was next ... which caused most to change their majors
 . Never used Fortran after that class, but as a communications systems programmer in the real world, I did dabble with Assembler some .... back when geeks were geeks  Kidz theze daze .... uphill in the snow .... both ways I tells ya  Cool stuff.... thanks for posting this thread! |

F77 was my first intro to programming back in college in the 80s. But I didn’t do CS so we moved rapidly to assembler and embedded systems.
Spent more than 20 years writing 370 (and on) assembler commercially. Still look at it on occasion. |

^^^ I found my niche outta college with a stint in IBM's R&D at RTP .... Advanced Comminications Division .... microcode development... and went on from there! Loved being a geek .... it sure beat working for a living

My first (and only) Fortran class was in Fall of 1975. Times have changed a little since then. A week ago, I bought my first iPhone. This thing is smarter than I am.

I was programing Fortran 77 just 4 years ago. I did quick programs nearly every week, mostly matrix and array manipulations. It's still a defacto language for pure hard mathematical calculations...
Now, yes, my boss was very old school, and so I picked it up from him, but still, it's far from dead.

One thing I learned for sure when getting my CS degree ... (although I was exceptional at it) ... was that I was NOT gonna be a programmer when I grew up
. I thrived as a systems/networking guru, designer & problem solver tho' .... geeking out. Then I quit.... full stop. I do miss the "really hard problem" solving aspect .... And not much else

Only 22 hours?
I'm in the process of updating the Bios and CIMC on some remote Cisco servers for our organization. I swear Cisco HUU is the slowest pile of code I've ever used. Running it from a remote iso makes it worse. We did two yesterday by driving to the site, but I only wanted to do that so that I could hit up the cheese store and pick up some Juusto. That, and the other ones we can't take down during the business day. |
