Coffee bean Extended best by date
Travelling in la france. Finally ran out of usa beans near saint girons.
Holy hell the coffee is bad here. Several shops had all the attitude-whole wall of dispensors and the beans are all rancid. Check this best by date: ![]() Yup. March 2025 is the stuff i bought. You should have smelled the stuff that expired in october 2024… no wonder coffee pods are popular. I forgive though because they have the bread and the cheese. ![]() |

With some coffee pod experience, I think its primary benefit is convenience. The beans may still have birthdays.

I have no experience with pods, but roasted beans are like bread .... they begin to degrade within a few days and optimally should be used within a few weeks (or a couple of months ... tops jmho). I ALWAYS check the roasted date ... locally roasted is best, but out of convenience I also buy Peets off the shelf, but never older stale stuff.
Those dates are absurd ![]() Year old bread ![]() Last edited by KFC911; 05-01-2024 at 04:31 AM.. |

Wait...you bring your own beans with you to Europe and a little grinder+everything you need to make a cup of coffee? That's amazing. It would never have occurred to me to do anything other than order a cappuccino in a cafe or coffee shop anywhere in the world.
I've spent quite a bit of time in France and never noticed that the espresso was bad. My brother's apartment in Paris is directly above a really good patisserie so you wake up to the smell of freshly baked croissants in the morning, wander downstairs in your slippers and grab a few while the coffee is brewing in the kitchen. ![]() Second wait...I just noticed that you are in the middle of nowhere in France. It's no different than the U.S. or anywhere else, the further you are from civilization, the worse the food and apparently coffee beans are.

But ive never seen a year out expiration date for roasted beans. Different than the usa: The produce is great, the wines/sidra are great, the cheese is i think the best in the world, most towns have awesome bread. The butter, the honey and jam… its just the coffee thats foul. Weird everything is so great except the coffee. We are mostly van camping out in nature so no cafe in the am. |
