Interesting...the Columbia rive bar is known as "The Graveyard od the Pacific"...thousands of shipwrecks there..many lives lost. You're a cat sailor, so..imagine the days of old, trying to enter the Columbia under sail alone. Coast guard heroes are stationed there today. Here's a short video on the Coast Guard, with some brief footage of what they do.

Yep, I have the H16 and also my little Super Snark, which is a monohull. I know my dinghy sailing is recreational, I can only imagine a big sailing ship being at mercy to the wind and tides.
One of the first questions I get asked about the Hobie Cat is, "Does it have a motor, and what if the wind dies?" I always tell people, I carry a paddle on board and "you" are the motor!!! ![]() Sent from my SM-S916U using Tapatalk

"You are the motor"..LOL! Reminds me of a happening with my little 15' Mutineer monohull dinghy.
I sailed mainly the higher elevation reservoirs, most often, Foster, about 20 miles from home. It was mostly used by the water ski set, a sailboat rare there. One day, a sheriff's deputy was in the launch parking lot, checking out boats for licenses, etc. All the paperwork I kept rolled up in a pill bottle was good. Then the saftety equipment check: "Life vest for each passenger?" Yep, 4 of 'em "Warning sound?" Yep, a loud whistle. The list went on until: "spark arrestor muffler?" No, don't have one "coast guard approved gas can?" No, don't have one. (Depuity checking violation boxes in his book.) Finally, it dawned on him..looking at the mast, he said: "Why..you don't have a motor!" Exactly...

The Glenesslin wrecked ~35 miles south of the Columbia bar; no good reason to be that that close to shore.
