Spamquest 2024

It's the reality TV show concept I'm going to pitch. :D

Any Spam fans here?

I haven't had Spam since I was a kid. My mom used to put cloves and brown sugar on a block of it and bake it. I think I've also had it sliced and fried.

I was in the grocery store a couple days ago and they had "original" Spam on sale for $1 off. On a whim I bought a can. For lunch today I made a fried Spam slider with locally made potato chips, some really great local German mustard, homemade coleslaw, and iced tea.

Spam is really, really salty. It's edible, but there are a lot better processed meat food products out there - if you are into such things.

I do a crossword puzzle a day. A clue was "Island favorite treat".

https://www.vice.com/en/article/mgx7yx/why-hawaiians-are-utterly-obsessed-with-spam

Hawaii consumes 7 million cans of Spam a year and there are only 1.42 million of us currently living in the islands—let that sink in a little bit. Nonetheless, Spam is both a blessing and a curse to Hawaiian cuisine.

Once I had the s, p and m I was good to go:)

herr_oberst 04-30-2024 10:04 AM

I enjoy spam on the regular.
I've also made recipes using spam for pot luck, and spoiler alert, they're always a hit. Spambalya, Spamchaladas, Spam dip..... (At my age I get the low sodium; it's still pretty salty.)

wdfifteen 04-30-2024 03:44 PM

Care to share some recipes? I’ve got 1 can minus one slice left and I’m takin’ this baby to the limit

Alan A 04-30-2024 04:06 PM

Batter and deep fry.

GH85Carrera 04-30-2024 04:10 PM

I have not purchased or eaten SPAM in over 40 years. Too much else to eat that is better.

herr_oberst 04-30-2024 04:25 PM

I cannot find my recipe for Spambalaya. There's a few on the google, but I kind of liked mine, so until I find it not going to post.

Here's some things I've put together over the years. I really like the Spam Enchiladas.

(always time for Spam!)

I’m sure this is not something for the food snobs. But for me, I love a fried spam sandwich! Whenever I go down to our lake cabin by myself, I’m always sure to stop off at the store and buy a can of spam. And my dogs love the leftover grease that I pour over their dog food. So I guess they love spam to!

rwest 04-30-2024 05:16 PM

I also haven’t had Spam since my early youth. I seem to remember it as being good, but I just can’t get myself to try it as an adult.

They had a food booth at the MN State Fair selling Spam sandwiches and other “delicacies”. I walked towards it thinking this was going to be the day I tried it again, but I couldn’t do it.

As a growing teenager - my mom had already raised my 3 older sisters that were out of the house - so it was just my Dad, Mom and my younger sister. My mom was tired of cooking right around the time that my growing body was interested in consumption of calories.

One of her "meals" offered for dinner - was a block of spam which she had sliced into 1/4" thick slices and interspersed between each slice, she placed a slice of cheddar cheese of 1/4" thickness which had been cut from the 1 lb block. She placed this in an baker's pan in the oven at 350 until "done."

I periodically joke with my wife about Spam casserole for dinner.

In 2004 I bought my first 911 here on pelican. It was located in Columbus, OH. I drove down to get it and literally ‘brought a trailer’… see what I did there?

As we descended into a valley somewhere in Wisconsin or Minnesota, we encountered a horrific smell. As we approached a small town, the smell got worse. Finally, we saw it, in all its glory, steaming like a fresh turd on a cold winter day… the Hormel SPAM factory.

I felt like I needed to shower and burn my clothes after passing through that town. I have not had SPAM since but will admit to eying it up at Walmart on Saturday night.

craigster59 05-01-2024 05:58 AM

I buy cases of Spam at Costco. I get the reduced sodium to cut down on the saltiness. Fried Spam and eggs , Spam fried rice, Spam Masubi, Spam Loco Moco, etc.

Did you know Todd Rundgren owns a restaurant on the island of Kauai that usually features Spam dishes?
https://tikiiniki.com

And Spam is made from pork butt and other good parts of the hog. No lips, noses or anuses as has been rumored..

.

"Gag a maggot" pretty much describes any large feedlot or rendering plant - chicken, beef, pork, fish. For that matter, ever been near a sugar-beet processing plant during harvest season?

flatbutt 05-01-2024 06:29 AM

How about Spam "sushi"?

Ewww. No, thank you. I have never (and hope will never) eaten SPAM, or any other fake meat.* The idea of it disgusts me.

*Disclaimer: Spent a decade in the Army and ate some questionable "meat" in MREs and in the chow hall, but I would knowingly never eat SPAM.

Zeke 05-01-2024 07:07 AM

It's not fake meat. It's cat food for humans. I stopped eating ALL meats including fish in 1985. I quit eating things like bacon in the 70's. I don't think my mother ever bought Spam but I know I've had it. Probably at a friend's house in grade school. I didn't care for the look of it then. I think the jelly that comes out of the can looked very unnatural. That was the 50's and likely the beginning of my distaste for flesh.

I know anything ground up into a paste and shoved into a sleeve (or God forbid an intestine) was on my list by the time I was 20. I think my weak spot was prime rib, the antithesis of Spam. I pretty much gag at the thought of pnk meat today.

I bet I'd leave the room if you opened a can of Spam. I will leave if you cook bacon.

OK-944 05-01-2024 01:26 PM

Way back when I was a boy scout (sometime before the last ice age) - I loved to spear an entire block of spam on a stick...roast it over a campfire until nice and crispy on the outside...eat away this crispy outside...then back over the fire it went - and on and on like this until the very last crispy bite was...gone!

Jeesh I gotta admit...that does sound pretty good right about now! Might just be a great time to embrace the nostalgia!

Good, more for me.

Truth be told, though, I might eat as much as a strip every few months, but it's flippin' good when I do!

Hmmm, wondering what Spam cooked in an air fryer would be like, I mean I've cooked hotdogs and plant based brats in the air fryer so I would think it would be like, well, fried Spam.

I always thought it was weird that a Japanese guy from Hawaii would like Spam and rice, for breakfast. Turns out that being a long boat ride from everywhere makes canned meat look like foie gras, go figure.

Pete made a number of spamtacular dishes.

That's about as obscure as it gets. What conversation are you in?

Room mate in college was from Hawaii, Japanese heritage. He ate a lot of Spam, which apparrently is popular in the islamds due to the distance from sources of food

Actually, I think it got popularized by the Nisei soldiers coming home WW2. I'm from Hawaii and of Japanese descent, but I don't eat a lot of those meats. Mom never really used SPAM, but when the SPAM musubi craze started when I was in college, she joined in. People like it in a satojoyu sauce, but not me. If I make one of those things, I just pan fry it and put it in the musubi press. It has to have rice on the top and bottom, and wrapped in half a sheet of nori.

Nowdays, I prefer Tulip over SPAM. You can make a nice sandwich with fried SPAM and a fried egg. Mayo is a must, and I love it with my egg sunny side up.

How does a person grate Spam?
Or has Spam changed in texture since the last I had it? (50 years ago)

SPAM and other similar canned meats were a classic menu item for my 1970's and 1980's Boy Scout back packing days. Wood smoke and frying SPAM brings back memories.

I had the exact dish many times growing up in East Tenn.

Also sliced/fried with eggs.

If'n I got lucky, Mom would let me open the can.

I can remember at least 2 Boy Scout campouts where some hapless Scout required medical attention because of the sharp edges left after opening the can; heck, I might have been a victim. I do lean towards the accident prone.

It's funny how we just accepted minor dangers BITD!

Zeke 05-02-2024 07:43 AM

Canned sardines could cut you. People knew how to do siht that many years ago.

With a lot less by way of tools. Cordless screwdriver:

The preferred alternative to SPAM in my early years.......

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1714672215.jpg

Notice it's clearly labeled "Only Premium Ham and Spices"....and did not have the slime/jelly of SPAM if I recall correctly :D

Mom used to have those in the pantry. An easy meal was Vienna sausage and rice. I wouldn't touch the deviled meat and potted meat. I did like Braunschweiger on soda crackers.

I don’t recommend it.
So far I’ve had it fried in a sandwich, uncooked in a sandwich, and fried with an egg for breakfast. Yesterday I was in a hurry for lunch and I threw a slice in the microwave to heat it up for a sandwich. The smell was not pleasant - or appetizeing. I don’t know how something can taste good to OK raw or cooked and smell so bad when merely heated.

I’m thinking cutting a block into about 6 pieces - think square hot dogs - jamming them on sticks and roasting them over a campfire might be interesting.

wdfifteen 05-03-2024 07:31 AM

My grandfather was a house painter. He used to stop by the little shack of a store at the crossroads on his way to a job and get a small box saltines, a 7 once Coke, and a can of “Vy-anna” sausages for lunch. On the days he took me to work with him I got the same lunch and it was a HUGE treat.

Hahahahaha!

I picked up a recipe from this forum a few years back for a chicken dip. It calls for a couple of cans of (yes cans) of chicken...

I made this concoction in a slow cooker and it was the hit of the appetizers at the party we went to.

The canned chicken smelled like cat food. The end product was delicious!
