Random philosophy thread
I was listening to a podcast today and heard a guy give an interesting perspective on Camus’ “Myth of Sisyphus.” It was this: the boulder and the mountain had the worst end of the deal. They become eroded to a grain of sand or a flat plain over infinity, While Sisyphus gets an easier and easier job.
This really struck me as a novel perspective. I was impressed. Thought I would share. Any other eye opening insights? |
I think Sisyphus got the worst end of the deal. The boulder and mountain are inanimate, so they don't care. Sisyphus was a dick, so he got what he deserved.
There was a podcast that dug deep to find the most original version of the myths. They evolved quite a bit by the time we got them. Question- is Buddhism a philosopy or a religion? Seems like people consider it a religion, but it seems like a philosopy to me. |

“All right," said Susan. "I'm not stupid. You're saying humans need... fantasies to make life bearable." REALLY? AS IF IT WAS SOME KIND OF PINK PILL? NO. HUMANS NEED FANTASY TO BE HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE. "Tooth fairies? Hogfathers? Little—" YES. AS PRACTICE. YOU HAVE TO START OUT LEARNING TO BELIEVE THE LITTLE LIES. "So we can believe the big ones?" YES. JUSTICE. MERCY. DUTY. THAT SORT OF THING. "They're not the same at all!" YOU THINK SO? THEN TAKE THE UNIVERSE AND GRIND IT DOWN TO THE FINEST POWDER AND SIEVE IT THROUGH THE FINEST SIEVE AND THEN SHOW ME ONE ATOM OF JUSTICE, ONE MOLECULE OF MERCY. AND YET—Death waved a hand. AND YET YOU ACT AS IF THERE IS SOME IDEAL ORDER IN THE WORLD, AS IF THERE IS SOME...SOME RIGHTNESS IN THE UNIVERSE BY WHICH IT MAY BE JUDGED. "Yes, but people have got to believe that, or what's the point—" MY POINT EXACTLY.” ― Terry Pratchett, Hogfather |
A Buddhist Monk told me that Buddhism is a philosophy. I am still pondering this.

There's no such thing as critical thinking
|
But there is thinking critical.
|
^^^ And people who think they know and are convinced they're right, but don't know and are wrong.
|
^^^I was thinking of something else, don't be critical. :D

I hate philosophy, especially, after taking it in college. Sure wish I took a different elective.
