Northern Lights anyone?
I am hearing reports of sightings in Europe today 5-10-24.
Going out with my BIL to some dark mountain top or similar for a look and some pics. Sort of a bucket list item for me-and I don’t have a bucket list. Anyone see anything or another false alarm? |

I've been fortunate enough to see them multiple times. They really are breath taking. If you have a chance do it!

I've got a cousin in Alabama that took these tonight.
And someone local to me (well, within 20-30 miles) took these with an iPhone (10sec exposure) tonight. When I saw that I went out, but the sky to the north was obscured by high thin clouds, and it's worse now.

Too much in the way of city lights in Coeur d'Alene to see the aurora borealis in our neck of the woods.
They looked like they took up a very large part of the sky, but were so faint that they almost resembled cirrus clouds. No colors.

For me it was bright enough to overcome the city glows at times down to the treeline.
I never considered that I'd be looking towards the southern horizons at the northern lights from here in south carolina. It faded around 11PM EST and I didn't see it anymore in the night. Pictures did not do it justice. The pink or reddish glow in many pictures were just a part of it. Beams like little kids running around with flashlights on a foggy night, flows like waterjets into sand, trailing flame like bits. Often there'd be a center point in the sky that the action would all point from. One of the final displays was a bright beam going down as far as I could see into the south.

Last night broke waaaaay out of the forecast.
The forecast for tonight compared to when tonight was tomorrow night's forcast yesterday is significantly increased. Quote:
Last night was forecast the same G7 of tonight's forcast, it was a G9 for six hours plus another three hours six hours later. The scale stops at G9.

My daughter pointed out the pink sky last night. I thought it was just from the sun set. My loss.

It's going to be completely overcast here tonight. I have a long history of missing good stuff when I'm interested. Venus transit of the sun several years back - clouds. Recent total solar eclipse - clouds. Aurora Borealis in Texas - clouds. And so on and so on...
