Vent Thread.
This thread is to vent. About, whatever. Just get it off your bosom, ladies.
|
As the thread starter, I will vent first.
I took over Board president of a non profit. I’ve been on the board two years, was on the Executive Committee last year. The culture is . . . odd. The President tried to decide everything, other board members privately complained to me that they were sidelined. This is Portland, everyone is afflicted with “Portland Polite”. Things needed to be done. Other board members pushed me to be the instigator. I forced certain issues, demanded votes and won them, generally over the President’s objection. So now I’m the President and there is something major that has to be negotiated and drafted and signed. We’re on draft v5, the counterparty has agreed, our lawyer has signed off, I call for an email vote, and the former President, now Past President board member, calls. They don’t like the document. We go through their objections. Objection #1. I appreciate your input, this has been in the draft since v2, and this is the first I’ve heard of your objection. What is your next objection please? #2, #3. Thank you, I will be happy to discuss my reasons at another time, but we are under time pressure and I already have a majority of votes so I will today execute this document as it stands and we can discuss #1-3 later if you wish. Vent. My view is, volunteering means many hours and substantial responsibility without being paid, I’m willing to take sh?t and do the job but I’m not willing to take sh?t and NOT do the job, if that feels like you’re being marginalized then maybe respond to drafts v1-4, thank you very much. Okay, what do you have to vent about? There must be panties needing untwisting. |
Whole bunch of stuff here:

Is a vent and a pet peeve the same thing?
Here is a vent. I went to the Akron Rubber Ducks farm-team baseball game last week and was bludgeoned with noise. Nice newer ball park but the volume of all of the announcements, jingles/sounds, calling of the game was deafining. To top it off they sell these little emm-effing duck call toys that parents buy their kids and the kids blow into them non-stop and they are absurdly loud and annoying. Never again. $10 for a big draft beer but that's a pet-peeve. lol |
I have 4 roof vents and I have no complains about them. ;)

But if you want a real vent how about the recession and the fact that all the dealers I repair for are in fear of closing. They sure were friendly when they needed me. But I knew who I was dealing with from the beginning. Antique dealers are used car dealers. I happened to have some good ones, but when things go south I'm the one left behind. I've sat through recessions at least 5 times so I know what the next 2 years are going to be. All my tools and machines are for sale. I won't be in need of them when I'm 81 and things come back. Old and facing a depression = get the hell out. How's that? One car gone and I don't need a truck any longer. It goes next. I've got enough moving gear for a small moving company but I'll be keeping that. It will be needed. Time to leave the sewer. |

Regardless, loud cacaphonous spaces are a peeve for me. I think/hope it is just normal aging, but I have increasing difficulty following conversations in loud, crowded places. |

There is some genuine Danish Modern designed by well known names of the time and built well. There is not much around. Repair items for Eames and other valuable furniture is a booming cottage industry. The parts don't come cheap. The copies are faithful but the original furniture made of solid wood goes for $1000's. All of these Gen X'ers that are making good money now don't know an investment piece from a cardboard box. For the last year or so I've been inundated with the stuff, the junk stuff. I'm sick and tired of repairing junk and I've pretty well closed the door to that furniture. One dealer is literally paying off the inside folks at Habitat for Humanity so they save it all for him. He finds it in the alleys where Boomers are moving and tossing what they bought back then if they haven't already. Houses are full of heavy wooden Mediterranean furniture that is now firewood. Hundreds of thousands of containers have come over from Europe with furniture from 1 to 2 centuries ago that sold for plenty enough money back when. It's "brown" furniture now. Baroque and Renaissance styles have depreciated 1000%. Empire is hanging on by a thread since the movement relates to MCM. Some Art Deco, the same, but AD spanned a long time originating from Art Novavax and segued into Bauhaus. And then the real MCM. Arts and Crafts figured in there too, but it has had its run. That was likely the last of real furniture. |
