Garage specific cabinet systems?

I am planning a bit of a garage update in prep for an engine rebuild. I have seen some amazing garages in the "garage" thread.

Started me looking at these garage specific cabinet systems. I don't want to drop a ton of cash, as thats less for the Porsche. I have seen a few cabinet and work space configurations in the $2K-2.5 range that seem well thought out.

Has anyone purchased these type of systems and what are your thoughts.

I did not buy a " system " but I did buy Gladiator brand metal cabinets for my man cave . If I remember correctly they are a division of Whirlpool . All metal construction with metal adjustable shelves . Main cabinet has a hammer tone black/grey finish while the doors are a grey finish with a diamond pattern on them . They were available through Home Depot when I bought them not sure if they still carry them but lots of places online do .Check them out you may like them .

On the other end of the spectrum look on CL or any local ads for people selling used kitchen cabinets . Generally speaking folks sell them for pennies on the dollar because they just spent $$$ on a kitchen remodel and the old cabinets are taking up space in the garage . Paint them the color of your choice and good to go .

I went with New Age Pro cabinets and am very happy with them. They are all metal/ fully welded construction and feel like a quality product (roller bearing drawers, soft close, etc.).

The sell them on Costco's website among other big box stores and there are often sales so keep an eye out.

You can look to IKEA or the basic boxes. Some of their frilly interior accessories are not suitable for the garage, but very basic shelving is available. No diamond plate though.

You might consider used kitchen cabinets. There’s nothing special about a garage cabinet versus any other kind of cabinet, it’s simply a box to put crap in. Used kitchen cabinets can be had sometimes for very little money.

looking at the same issue. Have found the following. Some very expensive, some surprisingly affordable. I like the Rosseau, but expensive. The Moduline seem pretty good for the price

Funny, but we just moved into a new house and contrary to my typical routine of building a workbench, shelving and everything myself, I am going to go with the Husky stuff that Home Depot sells. Not super-expensive, but appears well-built and very sturdy.

I plan to do it this weekend...

I have a decent roll away tool chest, a work bench (30x60) with wheels and storage above, and a work bench (8ft. long) w/ my vice on the end. Tools I don't use on a regular basis are on peg board so I can handily see them. I didn't/don't want a bunch of cabinets to rummage through to find things and take up a bunch of space. Once you put up cabinets, you loose that area for anything else. Just my $.02. If you're hinting on doing a rebuild yourself, you'll need plenty of area to lay out parts for cleaning, assembly, temporary storage, etc., etc.

I went with the PERFORMAX brand from Menards. I have the silver tall/48" wide dual door cabinet mainly for oil/chemicals/small parts, along with the a rooling tool cabinet, and boxes. Looking to add some overhead Performax cabinets when my barn shop is fitted out.

I too went with the Gladiator system when I re-did my garage. That was over 10 years ago and they still look great!

I used the Klearvue cabinets from Menards, they have 3 colors of diamond plate doors/drawers.

The picture shows about $2,000 of cabinets and tops- they wouldn’t stand up to hard shop use, but in a hobbyist garage who doesn’t beat up his stuff, they should last a long time.

Cabinets with doors ended up being a little over $100 each; adding drawers brings the cost up about $50 a drawer- 6 drawer cabinet is about $400.

I'd love to do a mancave with them... but fitting a whole garage could easily be $10K

and lastly the Moduline cabinet come to you flat packed , think Ikea... there are a bazillion little nut/bolt/lockwashers... and assembling them is effing time consuming

I'm ignoring the rest of your post and all of the replies, because they don't help.

When you're doing a rebuild, you need one thing. SURFACE AREA.

You will have dozens of pieces, none of which are very large. You need to be able to lay out 6 pistons and 6 jugs and 2 case halves, etc. You need counter space.

You also need a few square feet of open space to put things back together. Preferably something strong and flat, so you can do stuff like sit the crank vertically and mount the rods on it.

You don't need STORAGE...you need SPACE. You're better off having 2 3x8 folding tables than all of the cabinets in the world. Spend the $200 on folding tables, and maybe $200 on a wooden workbench that you can mount a decent sized vice on. That, and room for an engine stand, and you're golden.

I've done 2 rebuilds. The first was in my garage, with lots of surface area and no storage. Piece of cake. Second was in a garage with little to no open table space, so all of the parts/bolts/etc were stacked on top of each other in ziplock bags. SUCKED. Easy to forget things, easy to lose things, easy to have everything covered in a thick layer of oil and grease...SUCKED.

My "SPACE" is a 4' wide 8' long section of old bowling ally surface that I ripped down the center (ruined a circular saw blade from all the glue/nails), and put legs under both to make two 24"x 96" shop benches.

Pazuzu, I have 2 4x8 folding table that will be covered in white to ensure visibility, as well as some good bins to better sort bags.

But thanks for confirming the need for that kind of space. Most of the cabinet systems I am looking at have a good work are section too, between 2 table and that I should be able to section jobs to areas.

It's like people are trying to set me off this week! First a lift thread which is something I've been wringing over and over analyzing and now a garage cabinet thread that I've been hand wringing over and over analyzing. I have been searching CL for metal cabinets. A friend scored a free complete set of stainless lower cabinets with two large glass door cabinets on each end and stainless top from his BIL when they were redoing a hospital. Sooooooooo envious of those.

I saw a recycling company advertising metal cabinets on CL just this week. You might want to watch CL for a decent setup to pop up. Hospitals and other businesses will renovate and just scrap the old stuff.
