Metal roof noise

Just finished having a new metal roof installed. Old roof was three foot wide panels with exposed screws. New roof panels are standing seam with one foot wide panels. Screws are covered. I went this route because I’m too old to get up on the roof and tighten screws. New roof makes a lot of noise expanding and contracting. My wife wasn’t happy but it’s too late now and we will get used to it. New gutters with gutter guards that I didn’t have before and snow guards to keep the snow from tearing off the gutters. Glad it’s over as it took the contractor almost three weeks to finish.

Do you hear the sound inside the house or outside the house or both? What's it sound like?

I have a polycarbonate cover comprised of panels. I took care to not over tighten the screws with the built in gasket. That's an art in itself.

I also drilled oversized holes for expansion. I learned the hard way on that. Yeah, it creaks when the sun hits it.

I hope yours settles down. You might go find a construction forum or roofing forum and just read.

Steve, if the wife notices it she probably hears it inside more than outside. How about it, Bug's?

Inside. Sounds like pipes banging when you close the faucet. Took me a while to figure it out but it makes sense. More panels on the roof so more expansion. Guess it’s something I would have to disclose if I ever tried to sell.

The steel roofing sales has really jumped here in the last few years.

My next door neighbor lady (90 years old) had hers done last year. I asked her about if it was loud and she said 'Yes....but I got used to it real fast!) She's a real character.

It’s definitely noisy when it rains. Hail is up there too!

My shop is on the 2nd floor, flat metal roof with membrane. Rain is very loud, raining now. You can hear squirrels running around. They are so loud that at first I thought they were the raccoons that enjoy the dumpster every night. Squirrels would just slide down your roof at least.

My standing seam roof is 3 years old now. Not noisy - not even when it rains.

And yours might see a little bit of sun and heat expansion.

Yes, which is why I chose this color, although some are of the opinion (and told me so) that color doesn't matter. That's fine. You do you - I'll do me.

The old roof was asphalt shingles. I have an attic - not very high - but it's there. Temps used to get way up there - now they are much less. I know this from my wireless indoor outdoor thermometer w/ it's 3 remotes. I keep one in the garage, one in the attic, and one just outside the front door.

I don't know why Bugs is experiencing noises - mine's been great and has helped reduce my electric bill!

Our historic church building, The Church of the Cross, Anglican Church has a standing seam metal roof. In a South Carolina summer gully washer, it’s so loud you can’t even hear the preacher!

I have to assume that white or "silver/metal" colored would be the best and would be different than any other color. I'd have to see scientific proof that those colors didn't make a difference. I have to assume, especially in hot, sunny climates that heat absorption must have an environmental impact on the home (likely HVAC), and eventually could have an impact on the roof material.

Had mine for 10 years and have had the same experience regarding noise.

Have the same color and standing seam as Bugs on a family farm house. No noise. But, this is in a very moderate climate. Temp swings are sure to be less and there is a lot of shade.

Do existing 16" on center rafters have the strength to support the metal roof?

So some people have noisy roofs and some don't. Any reason for the difference?
