3 days in London
 

Hi we will be in London July 2-5 anything a must see. And a few more days after the 12th. I was hoping to take the train over to Germany for the porsche museum.Any tips you can give thanks karl

Germany Porsche museum is not a day trip, it's hundreds of miles away. You could get a car and drive via Riems Gueux.

It's the British Grand Prix at Silverstone from 4-7 July.

Number one best visitor attraction for me in London would be the Imperial War museum. Tower Bridge. Buckingham Palace. St Paul's Cathedral. The Tower of London.The Houses of Parliament.

It has been quite a few years since I was over there but the Imperial War Museum in London is great. I googled it and apparently it is free and you don't have to book. Closed Dec 24 to 26th.

Great art galleries and the London Eye is good too. So much to see. The London Underground is a good way to get around. London taxis are excellent and the driver can give you suggestions on what to see.

Restaurants. All kinds. East Indian food in London can be some of the best.

Great stores. Harrods, Selfridges and many more.

You get to skip the lines to anywhere you want to go and they can tell you way more than wandering around on your own. They’ll cater to your tastes.

Loved the S side street art.

Loved Westminster Abbey. Some big names buried there.

I thought Greenwich was pretty awesome. It’s the zero for TIME.

Family likes Harry Potter land or whatever it is called. It’s ok.

Madam Tuesaused, Tower of London, Parliment buildings, Westinister Abby.

second the Imperial War Museum, also Churchill's war rooms, Tower of London, Wellington's house, I had to make a quick pilgrimage to the Ace Cafe for a couple pints.

The British Museum and Greenwich Observatory.

Windsor Castle. You will be amazed.

The last time I was in London, 15 years ago or so, was for the Farnborough Airshow.

I got there two days early and stayed in Kensington, near Kensington Palace, Buckingham Palace, Big Ben. etc.

I had not spent any time in London previously so I just walked and soaked it in. It is a remarkable city to wander about on foot.

I am a big WC fan so I hit all those spots, including 10 Downing. I was in history heaven. Sounds goofy but there it is.

See the things that you can't see elsewhere.

Perhaps Smithfield market, a hundreds of years old late night machine distributing to the endless commercial meat-slingers. Hanging meat, forklifts, (careful) public welcome and so on - then a meat-breakfast at a nearby market pub opening when the market closes. After many hundreds of years they're closing (gentrification) and moving to the burbs.

There might be a good/interesting produce and or fish-focused version of the same. Night busses are interesting at 0400 as long as you avoid drunk clubbers.

Grab a pre-sunrise breakfast at a 24/7 joint like Duck and Waffle. In the city near Liverpool St station, rez encouraged, 360-degree view of things like the gherkin and St Pauls, champs encouraged but likely 20GBP a glass.

See the Thames barrier and a nearby pedestrian tunnel under the river. Up top, grab a TfL ferry to get back to the other side of London.

Head upriver a bit to get cleaner water and hire a guided kayak trip.

Oxford is probably only 45 min from Paddington assuming the rail-things are working properly. Hop off one stop early and walk the last six or so miles along the Thames and into town.

Cocktails at the Booking Office at St Pancras station is a "must-do" for me.

The Silver Vaults are pretty cool, and in the city center. Free to enter, they do check your bags and you might want to bring sunglasses for all of the glitter.

If you're flying out of LHR I advise staying near the airport the night before. If so, and you're staying at one of the bigger/corporate places in Bath Rd, there's a bowling alley about even with the airport's east boundary. Given more time, Windsor/Eton is an easy bus ride or even a walk from the hotels immediately to the west by the M4.

(we're planning a trip for July due to a spouse's business stuff - this time kiddo and I may head off to Wales).

Well done: I cut and pasted your post into my list to travel to do's along side all of Glen's pictures of really interesting places.

Answers to this kind of question kind of depend on knowing the tastes and interests of the OP. My own tastes run towards theater, art museums, markets and restaurants and also exploring neighborhoods. I went to London for a weekend at the beginning of March to visit friends and see a couple of plays. I love theater and I think London is tied with NY for the best city in the world for theater.

Lot of great recommendations on this thread but it really comes down to what you like to do.

For me the British Museum was a high point of my few days in London. Climbing the O2 was fun but not as exciting as I thought it would be. The India (restaurant) was as good as the British Museum if not better. Wish I could have gone to Borough Market.

If you like jazz, Ronny Scott’s in SoHo. If you like the blues Ain’t Nothing But the Blues just off Regent Street.

Harrods is fun, have lunch in the downstairs section.

a trip on the tube can be interesting. Piccadilly Square for a pint?

Piccadilly Circus. Leicester square…
Of the two I prefer the pubs in the latter. Ymmv.

Thanks for all the suggestions as we leave in a couple of days. We are having a hard time finding a good tour. So we will just have to make the best of what we can.

Shepherd Market is pretty cool and very close to Green Park and a ton of other great things to see
