Double cicada brood event today Google doodle

The Google doodle is about this. Of course there is no such thing that I know of in SoCal being a desert by nature. I guess up north in CA there are some but not like the other parts of the U.S.

So, one species comes out of the ground every 17 years and another every 13 years? I've been down South and heard the noise. Terrible. Maybe I was there on double year. Nope, it was 221 years ago.

Apparently IL will have the double more than other states. Up to 120dB. And I thought the daily 200 little planes over my house 7am to 7 pm was bad. They are only75 to 80dB.

It's interesting. You hear about the big "broods" frequently. It was only in the last couple of years that I discovered the fairly limited extent of those broods. The various broods are on cycles, and sometimes the cycles of multiple broods overlap which create super broods (my term). It's also interesting (to me) how some of the broods are so widespread and some are so limited (6, 7, 22, for instance)

I've been finding some empty body shells in my yard lately.
