A pet peeve: Rare vs Valuable

How many times have you read an advertisement for a car or something that states that such a thing is "rare." I have. And then the seller goes on to make the logical leap that such rarity = high value.

I just needed to vent. I figured y'all would understand.

Rant over.

Rant away...

I can not believe the current "value" of any Air Cooled Porsche!

How much is a nice 356 Speedster? They're certainly rare but more than $500,000!

Gogar 06-23-2024 09:54 PM

Some things are "rare" because no one wanted said things and the market forces worked as intended

Bill Douglas 06-23-2024 09:55 PM

I read the word rare as meaning it's hard to get parts for.

Peter there was quite a nice 1978 SC around here advertised at NZD $140,000. I thought it was quite a nice car as it was a slightly dark green and completely unmolested example. A bit of rust in one of the fenders but otherwise a nice enough car. Sold in a couple of days.

Yep, it's much the same in Australia. I'm actually thinking about selling mine (1978 SC).

Local similar cars are being advertised for well over $100,000 right now.
(If I sell my car I'll start a thread)

Bill Douglas 06-23-2024 10:27 PM

Do not sell your car.

Thanks but I don't even drive it that much anymore. 3 or 4 times a month is about it. Only 5 years ago I drove it almost every day.

I'm 59, thinking about retirement and simplifying my life.

So, you tried to buy a car or something and your offer was refused?

Superman 06-23-2024 11:11 PM

Lawn Darts are rare now.

Duh. THAT'S when you want the car, The wineries to the north. A run up through Gippsland, Monaro district, NSW. Drunk Swedish girl hitch hiking...

Porsche made fewer than 4000 Speedsters and a lot of them are gone. There is no accounting for the market, it goes where it goes.
In September I will have owned mine for 50 years. I’m not ready to let go of it yet, but half a million bucks would be hard to resist.

So are lawn dart players.

I have a very rare guitar, but it is not valuable. I have a Gibson SG Firebrand, but instead of the natural wood finish, mine was painted at the factory. Very rare, but...not valuable.

GH85Carrera 06-24-2024 06:38 AM

Yugos are rare now. And still a POS car no one really wants except as a rare item. Kinda like a Trabant.

LWJ 06-24-2024 07:09 AM

Yugo is perfect example. Same as a Firebrand SG.

And no, didn’t have a low offer refused. Funny.

2.7RS 06-24-2024 07:18 AM

Most parts on the classifieds are not rare or neither valuable.

Whole bunch of starving flippers and resellers trying inflate what it used to be a hobbyist website. That seems to be common, far from rare.

And I won't comment on their warranties, payments, shipping, return policies.

A travesty....

Rusty Heap 06-24-2024 09:23 AM

Fact, you can't sell "Vintage" Lawn Darts sets on Ebay as they're considered a weapon.

HAH, I have 2 sets from the 70s.

Of course when you're 10 years old playing with a Bow and Arrow, we'd ALWAYS shoot one straight up to see who could catch it..........Stoopid kids stuff like building Forts and getting into dirt clod fights, all before video games ruined imagination.

This. ^^^

Some things were not meant to be rare when they were made but no one wanted them, because free market. Other things are rare because they were really special items when new and either could not be produced in high numbers or were intentionally kept rare. Demand exceeded supply from the start. Then, factor in how many of the special items were rusted out or crashed and you have a valuable item on your hands in present time.

JackDidley 06-24-2024 09:47 AM

Corvairs and Edsels are rare and nearly unsellable.
