Finally resurrected my '79 SC....
My '79 SC which I bought in 2004 has been sitting patiently in my shop waiting for me to show it some love. Seems like i sat for only a year or two, but my plate says 2019 since I last drovr it. Crazy how fast time flies the older one gets. I charged the battery last week to shuffle it around and it would not start. After some troubleshooting I found the fuel pump was seized from sitting. I got it freed up and got the car running again.... Major smoke fest for the first 10 minutes! Anyhow, last night I recharged the AC and today I am getting new plates to put it on the road again. Sure was nice taking it for some quick jaunts up and down my road last night. Think I will drive it for the rest of this summer on nice days to work.

Nice looking car. Is it still R12?

My post on my AC from 19 years ago. https://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/226027-diy-134-conversion-sc-complete.html |
Tim, the old original rubber hoses are non barrier hoses. They will always leak. The only cure is to replace them with barrier hoses. And holding a vacuum foor a while is not a real test. Air pressure is just 14.7 PSI. Not much of a pressure test. The G body 911s have about 27 feet of hose and multiple components. A pruge with nitrogen to 75 to 100 PSI and a long vacuum pull to get to under 100 microns is really needed to rid the system of moisture.

Nice. I did this with my 77 after it sat stuck in 4th for several years. My then 11 year old son, freed the transmission while I was feeding cows…
Enjoy! |

Back when I did this 19 years ago, it would typically need about a can every summer which was no big deal for me and much cheaper/easier than replacing all the hose snaked through a 911SC (front AND rear condensers and evaporator). ;):) |
It is good to hear from you, Tim. Yes, time does fly.
|
Very cool, Tim...what a gorgeous SC! There's nothing in the world like an air-cooled flat six!
My '83 has been at my mechanics waiting for an engine rebuild plus some body work. I think this will be the year he gets it done! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1719236125.jpg |
I hold the SC in a very special place in my heart. Sort of the underdog of aircooled Porsche. But, at the same time, they just work so darn well. ENJOY!!!

A bunch of nice white cars.
Funny and sad at the time how they sit in the corner or shop somewhere waiting for it to be road worthy again. My 930 drives and drives well but I took it in to a friend for an oil change, plugs and valve adjjstment and a few small items. Its been over 4 months. Hey, free storage |
We've all had the experience of driving our air cooled Porsches after ignoring them for months or years, and it is always a big-fat-grin experience. Then we say "Why have I not been driving this car regularly?"
|
And as a bonus, it's doubled in value
since you last drove it. |
