Your tree is going to recover and be just fine. Just hope :).

That said, the hole and work the gas contractor did is on the utility easement imo. Even if they cut a root, etc. and the tree eventually dies, you have no recourse.... as they did nothing wrong. Just my .02 ....

Looking up Arborists near me only leads to people who would cut the tree down. A feature of Google I guess. I do have another tree in the back yard that has a cracked branch that is partially over the garage, so maybe I can find one to look at the front tree when they remove the limb on the back tree. I thought about doing it myself, but a 8:12 pitch and my age could lead to a bad day.

Now that the rain has stopped and I can get a good look at the tree, yes, it did drop some leaves, but it's not even half the tree at this point. I'm going to keep an eye on it. At least this year it didn't dump a garbage can worth of seeds on the driveway.

We had some pretty bad storms this spring, and maybe that stressed the tree more than the hole. A similar sized tree down the block came down during one of the storms. It took out power for the whole neighborhood.

what is the tree species? as i suggested that thing needs to be thinning trimmed. I live in the forest and set aside about $1500 a year for tree work on the large pines, the black & canyon oaks on my property for tree health and safety. Waiting on a woodpecker nest to be vacated to have some major pruning done of the black oak I call the reaper over my house. Had some done a 3 years ago on it, last year had a black oak thinned out over my well house and mistletoe taken from a few others.


My tree guy always fills out the tags as "safety pruning" so if I have a fallen tree do damage I can demonstrate to my insurance company a history of preventive care.

My 6th summer here and they have never nested in that hole before. They did not establish this location this year because I'd have noticed. Did some research and found they may return to nests they were hatched in years later after the soiling of a nest from previous clutch of young has subsided.

Closing out the story.

Got nowhere with Xcel Energy. Besides the hole in the right-of-way, they dug another one under the canopy to run the line to feed his meter. Maybe they killed it, maybe something else did.

The bark started coming loose on some of the upper limbs, so I figured it was dead. A guy left a flyer in my mailbox, I called him up, we did a deal for the tree and a limb that was hanging over the garage in the back yard. We left the trunk for now. It's just about on the lot line and will disappear as trees near it fill in.

The neighbor on the other side ended up putting his duplex up for sale. Listed it on a Thursday, had 7 offers on Saturday, over asking but he wouldn't say how much. He's moving back to Illinois to be closer to his parents. He was there 19 years.

The tree took 2 loads of wood chips, and 2 1/2 loads of logs to haul away. They started on Saturday around 10:00am, worked until about 5:30, then came back on Sunday to pick up the logs. He had a small dump truck, maybe a 10' bed.

Might consider leaving the trunk. Make an art carving or create a home for birds. Raptors love a lone pole.

That looked like a nice 'mostly-healthy' shade and privacy tree.

Sorry about your tree. I have 3 acres with a lot of oak trees and we take care of them by having them thinned as needed so we don't end up with broken limbs and any mistletoe removed. The trees add value to the property and we enjoy them.

I am having a tree company come out next week to remove mistletoe from my neighbors tree that borders our property. He can't see the tree from his hime and told me to do whatever I want.
