Is Craig's List dead?
Five days ago I put my pool up for sale on Craig's list and Facebook Marketing.
I got ONE response on Craig's list, and 6 responses and a pending sale from Facebook Marketing. I used to sell things on Craig's list in a matter of days, but lately the place seems dead. Anyone else seeing this? Is it a trend? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1720122289.jpg "Selling our complete pool outfit. Sale includes a 27 foot, 52 inch deep pool in good condition, AquaPro heat pump heater, Hayward pump, filter with extra filter cartridge, chlorine feeder, misc pool tools, Maytronics Dolphin robotic pool cleaner, solar cover with reel, winter cover, steps, deck with steps and railings, pool toys, and pool box – heck you can even have the water. Everything you need to be swimming well into September. All items are in good shape and currently in use. You disassemble and remove. Available immediately." |
I have had similar experiences. Just took a deposit on my 914 GT Tribute from Facebook Marketplace and have sold/bought several things there in the last few months. Sold my road bicycle, found a nice deal on some winter wheels/tires for my truck, etc. Anytime I've used CL in the last two years it seems dead.

The housing isn’t… especially if one is looking for a roommate… CL started to charge to list cars. Facebook marketplace is more inclusive as you can search a larger region, but searching for specific things is not as trivial as CL.
Facebook has become an addiction for a lot of folks, thus the marketplace has a lot of traffic. |
I sold 3 of my bicycles on Craigslist recently; 1 within hours, 1 took 24 hours and the last one took about 5 days.
KaChing! |
I peruse the camera section of Craig's List almost daily. I was going to list some cameras on it but I notice a lot of the ads are repeats/updates on a continuing basis.

Two things killed Craigslist. First was Federal legislation resulting in CL shutting down personals. The other was Facebook Marketplace. That MP usurped CL is rather ironic.
MP has a horrid user experience and is ripe with scams. |
I had always heard of having to watch out for scams on CL. I bought my riding lawn mower and my Hobie 16 off of CL, but that was back in 2016 and 2017, ya know, them good ol days. [emoji23]
I don't have Facebook, or I would probably be on FB marketplace looking up stuff all the time. Sent from my SM-S916U using Tapatalk |

What about Recycler?

CL isn’t great
Marketplace isn’t either. I do think selling CL May have an edge. Not sure why. I use both commonly. It’s sad re: scammers. It would be a treat to simply buy and sell crap. |
It all sorta stinks. I post across ebay, FB and CL and sometimes stuff sells, other times I just eat spam. Spam, spam, spam, spam,...cue up Monty
|
FB MP has the algorithm, CL doesn’t. So MP will show you what it thinks you’re interested in, and it’s often right, which means scrolling MP becomes entertaining, and people get used to using MP instead of CL.

Craigslist has been dead where I live for years. People chose kijiji early on. Now kijiji is circling the drain.
Loads of scams on marketplace tho. |
I sold my Jaguar XK on CL recently. Took less than a week. I'm not a Facebooker so I don't sell on Marketplace but I have bought a few things using my daughter's account. For me, it seems like there's more scams on MP than CL? It also seems like 90% of the stuff on MP are old, already-sold items.

I would drive down to New Smyrna Beach and leave it on the curb before I would sell something on Ebay, CL, or FB these daze :D
|
When I search on CL the results are mostly multiple identical ads from the same retailers and some guy who wants to buy old Porsches “In any condition.” I searched “Porsche 356” and got pages of results, not one of which had anything to do with Porsche 356s.
|
^^^ I frequently see those multiple identical ads on CL. WTH? They're not always from dealers. Sometimes there're 8 in a row. Are they hitting the 'publish' button 8 times or what. CL charges a $5 fee for a car for sale these days.

I had a few small power tools and almost couldn't give them away on CL.
I don't like FM because there is no anonymity there - everyone knows who you are etc unlike CL that is anonymous until you actually exchange contact/phone info to make any negotiation and deal. And even then - it's only between you and potential purchaser. |
I shop CraigsList every week - primarily looking at estate sales and materials. I only waste my time on ads that have photos and if I see something of interest, I'll go to the estate sale. For materials, I've picked up many things over the years including new brick, lumber, etc..
I've sold a couple of things but it's hit & miss. |
I haven't bought or sold CL in years. Too may scammers, and the sellers are anonymous.
On FB, I can look at prior sale history, reviews, and look at seller's main page to see if they look legit. |
