this will end badly. likely with more accidental harm than any possible prevented harm.

1. no one is coming in through your AC unit, youd have to be on an epic 200mg gummie and clinging onto the earth for dear life, to be this paranoid. like bro, windows are made of glass. doors get left unlocked all the time. dont overthink it.

2. attaching an electric fence to the grounded chassis of the AC unit will blow something. hopefully just a breaker, but old buildings, old electrical ... god only knows what the weakest link in the chain is. the weakest link in the chain could be your friend.

I am 99% sure the metal housing is grounded so this will not work. The fencer applies a potential between and object and ground. Since the housing is already grounded, it will just short out the circuit and accomplish nothing.

+1 That’s why I said you can’t attach the electric fence to the AC unit.

I will let you guys know albeit it was not my question.
Like CANBUS electricity will follow its own path and take the one of least resistance.

This. If you look at any electric fence installation the wire is insulated from the posts. Why? Because if you provide a ground to the fence it discharges there rather than thru the beast touching it. Could he run fence across the a/c unit? Sure, but he'd have to screw insulators to the case and be sure the fence doesn't touch it.

I'm sure Unc has a bit of fence, and I've been using electric fence for 20 yrs. It becomes rather ineffective even if vegetation grounds it. Its not a "path of least resistance" issue. Its low voltage so any continuous ground reduces the amperage below the effective range.

All true except it is HIGH voltage and LOW current. My fence tester shows mine at 1700 volts. If I let grass or weeds lie on the fence it turns them brown in a few hours.

Exactly. Basically ESD on steroids. While the AC chassis is “grounded”, it is not “ground” and the pulse doesn’t dissipate until it finds its way to ground through the electrical panel earth ground connection.

Window AC units come with the 3 prong receptacle with the ground.

If AB insulates the cage, i don’t see why it won’t work…

Van door handles electrified.

If he puts the AC unit at high voltage, what does he think will happen when he touches the frame from inside the house?

Can he cut the ground prong off, and insulate the frame enough to shock someone? Sure. It's a terrible idea all around.

He could also ground the frame and put a high voltage steel plate on the ground...

So, why go through the trouble of rigging up an electric fence around a window ac unit. Save the money and get the bracket thing I posted. Your ac unit will be secure, and it is very inexpensive.
