HUGE ****ing earthquake in LA
 

Just now...building is still shaking. I'm on the 5th floor and it almost knocked me off the couch. :eek:

Everyone in the USA has known "the big one" is overdue. Hopefully not the really big one this time.

Turns out it was "only" a 4.4 but centered in South Pasadena, so maybe 10 miles away. The amount of shaking you feel is of course a function of how big the quake is and how close you are to it. This was really close.

My butt Richter scale thought it was bigger, another factor is whether you are out moving around or driving as opposed to sitting still. When you are sitting quietly on the couch reading, as I was, you can feel and experience even a small quake that you would totally miss if you were driving. I feel lots of small tremors when still, sometimes I wonder if it's an inner ear issue or an actual quake. This one was not a wobbler...it moved my building pretty aggressively side-to-side. :eek:

Been working on my bus which is on jack stands right now. I guess I will put it off for a few days.

Wait an hour or so for aftershocks and have at it. Safest time possible is right after an EQ, statistically speaking. :)

Umm, a bit concerning. Japan has been talking of a big one coming. And a week or so ago we had a moderate one here on Wellington's south coast. It felt big because it was shallow and only about 20 kilometres away.

When I was a kid, we lived in Japan. We felt a few decent sized quakes, but hundreds of tiny tremors. One of the bigger quake that occurred when I was there happened when I was riding in the car with my mom. I had no idea, but she noticed.

We had a fairly big one and a lady had stopped her car and was walking around looking at the tires. She laughed when I called out and said it was an earthquake.

My mom said that she thought there was a flat tire, but I was 8, so I had no idea what was going on.

Right before is good too ... statistically speaking ... or something... or not.

I dunno how you guys live with that stuff. we had one in Maryland years back. I was sitting in my truck eating lunch and thought someone had jumped on the back bumper and was trying to shake the truck. Bizarre feeling.

The one that damaged the Washington Monument back in 2011? I'm near Greensboro and the fault line goes from your area to down into SC....

My first and only tremor .... barely noticed it. Don't need to feel more....

We had a 4.5 earthquake back a few years ago that was centered just a few miles from us.

I heard a loud BANG like a large dumpster getting dropped off a truck, and then I felt a wave of movement traveling south through our concrete slab floor. The house rattled, but zero damage.

It is a weird feeling. I was amazed at how loud it was. I used to work in a very industrial area. There was a business across the street from us that had a large dumpster. that used for scrap metal parts. When they had the new guy dumping it, it made a lot of noise. The company made oil field valves and evidently sent the scrap to a scrap yard in a large dumpster.

We had one (rare) in Michigan around the early 80's.
It was a Saturday afternoon and I was watching the Tigers on tv while sitting in my recliner.
I first thought someone had grabbed the headrest and was yanking it. Then the announcers on the game said..."WTH was that??"

Then they said an earthquake had hit Michigan. (no injuries)

We had one the other night at 9pm which is weird, they usually strike early morning. 5.5 centered in Lamont up by Bakersfield. I was upstairs and felt it, Wife was on ground floor and didn't feel anything.

Lots of small quakes are better than one big one!

It's strange how different earthquakes can feel. I've been in 2, a 4.0 in san francisco in 2015, which felt like a freight train drove through the next room. Long duration and tons of vibration. The 4.8 in NJ this spring was more like an explosion, a loud bang followed by what felt like my house swaying instead of shaking.

My sister lives over in Highland Park, said it shook them pretty good, but their house sits on bedrock, so they typically don't get a lot of motion.
