Anyone go to Pebble Beach this week?

Curious if any of you went to the Concours this week? I have only been once, many years ago when I worked for a gent and we were part of the team representing a pre war Mercedes he and I restored. My friend and Boss passed away a few months later from a heart attack. I have never had the opportunity to return. Hopefully one day.

So for those that went, how was it? What cars stood out to you?

Can't bring myself to pay $600...

I had parts I restored go.

Didn't go this year. Watched some coverage of it. Some nice cars but it wasn't an exceptional year, in my humble opinion.

Not a fan of the unrestored cars that are showing up now for exhibition.

Rtrorkt 08-19-2024 06:41 AM

Worked the track for the pre and reunion, did Seaside Porsche Monday, put my car in the Pacific Grove show on Tuesday, Wed at the track, Friday judge at Werks, Sat turn 10 at the track. Pebble is just too hard to get to, full of posers and expensive, though it seems McCalls and the Quail have taken the prize for the most expense tickets.

This will give you some idea of what showed up this year:

To stroll around a golf course and gawk at the old cars? Well, I suppose it keeps the undesirables like myself at bay...

javadog 08-19-2024 09:16 AM

It’s a fun event…

it’s on my list, I’ve got to get there one of these years….

I attended several 'Car Week' events and volunteered to work at the Concours, scanning tickets for entry. In return, I was given a jacket, hat, poster, lunch, and best of all...free admission to the show field.
It's a sensory overload...incredible cars everywhere you look!

Great photos, rcooled. Car week is indeed sensory overload and not just at the concours; it's at the race track, in the paddocks, on the highway between Monterey and Laguna Seca, in Carmel, everywhere....

The combination of the machinery and the natural beauty of the location can seriously almost be too much for me. And Car Week is so much more than Pebble Beach, though that is certainly the top event.

I was at the Porsche event and the Pacific Grove show as well. What car did you bring to the events? We had to head home on Wednesday so missed the bigger events, but had a great time and saw lots of spectacular cars.

What are the 3 levers for? I'm guessing parking brake, shifter and maybe a release for Captains chairs?

Here's a video about the restoration of this car.

(This car was found in a field and fully restored by Ferrari at the factory. I'm trying to imagine how much that cost $$$$ ...)

The FREE "Concours on the Avenue" where the "Tour d'Elegance" stopped in downtown Carmel for lunch was an annual ritual for us. You could get a taste of Pebble without spending the big money. There were plenty of cars that did the "Tour" and were on display. Every year was a different theme, more of some vintages than others. We would take a morning drive from Paso Robles to Carmel, walk the Avenue, have lunch and drive away. It was somewhat crowded but it was always a lot of fun.

Then the founder/organizer, a guy named Freedman, passed away and that was that. It has yet to return

Yeah, the tour no longer has it's lunch stop in Carmel...I guess it was getting a little too busy with all the people trying to get a look at the cars. A good way to check out all the cars on the tour...and hear them run...is to be where they queue up for the start. It's in PB, right at the Gooding auction tent. Need to be early though...by 7am it starts getting busier with more people arriving.

This guy actually ran Tuesday's 'Concours-on-the-Avenue' which was absent last year due to his passing. That Tuesday slot's now been taken by 'Concours-for-a-Cause'...a similar event with the same mix of cars.

That mid-day Thursday stop in Carmel was part of the 'Tour d' Elegance' for cars that'll be shown in Sunday's concours.

The year I went/was involved I found just observing the people there really interesting. Almost as interesting as the cars.

Among the car owners I met you could divide nearly all of them into two categories, either super nice people or total douche's. It also was kind of funny seeing all the hot women with guys 20-30 years older, or mismatched. Really fit all the stereotypes.

speeder 08-23-2024 09:09 PM

Oh yeah, Pebble Beach and Carmel during car week is a show in more ways than one. It’s one of those events like the Kentucky Derby where you actually see rich people dressed like Thurston Howell on Gilligan’s Island. Completely hilarious, if you don’t take it too seriously. :)

Did anyone see Wayne’s Clockwork Orange car?
