BMW 550i running hot
The car never ran hot before. Three weeks ago, I took it for a drive and the temperature was fine during the drive. Stopped at the grocery store on the way home, drove the car home parked the at my front door, shut the car off, carried the groceries in the house. Then got in the car and drove it to the garage to park it. That's when the oil temperature spiked to 250, just in that short distance.
I checked everything, topped the coolant off and replaced a leaking turbo coolant line. I took the car on a long drive and everything was fine. I did the same drive this weekend, stopping at the grocery store, and etc. The temperature didn't spike until I parked it. Same as 3 weeks ago. Also, can't remember if the fan had been running when I turned the car off. Could it be fan problems, or thermostat? Gary |

BTW, it seemed as if the temp increased while parked.

I would guess the fan is not coming on at the end of your drive.

Next time, try driving it further than just to the garage and see if the temp comes down immediately on the gauge. It may be a sensor located in a place where there is always flowing oil and when you shut it down, it's measuring the temperature of static oil very near the turbo or something?
Just a thought, based on information provided. ![]()

Fixed, needed a new fan. BTW, took it on a road trip to Bozeman. It was like a magic carpet ride. Drove 5mph over the speed limit on cruise control there and back.

![]() This is another one on the way to Bozeman. 4300lbs. going 75-85 mph with 400hp and 450 lb pounds of torque. Fuel economy dropped a bit coming out of the Great Basin as the altitude increased. |

My son has an M550i that I've gotten to ride in a couple of times.
You're right, it is a magic carpet ride.

Great cars when everything is working right. What year and how many miles on yours?

It's a 2011 with 54,000 miles. Got it from the dealer. A grandma traded it in on a new one. She drove it to SLO county to see her grand kids. So, service records at both Bill Pearce in Reno and the dealership in SLO. The car looks amazing except, the wheels have curb rash(must be a grandma thing).

I'll find another one when it hits 60k. Been having good luck with BMW doing that.

We had an E46 that did that brand new, out of the dealership... Fan never worked from factory.. At speed it cooled great just from airflow, stopped, no so much... BMW and cooling systems is old history... Lotsa plastics. On Roundel (the Panorama BMW equivalent) The tech section is full of "here is what you do for preventative maintenance on any BMW: replace the entire cooling systems every xxxx" ;-)
