Anyone ever have someone hack into your PayPal account?

Yesterday I came home from work to find 2 emails from PP, documenting 2 payments made to someone I never heard of. One payment was $1,350 and the other $995.

I looked at things and didn't see anything to indicate it was a scam email, so went to my PP account and both transactions were shown.

The money came right out of my checking account.

So I initiated a claim on the PP website about the unauthorized transactions. About 20 minutes later got an email saying after reviewing my account & the transactions, they determined they fit in with my transaction history, so my claim was denied.

WTF? Made zero sense.

So I phoned them and long story short someone checked and saw the person had made some previous attempts to get into my account before getting in doing the transactions - so they sent the claim up to another department for further investigation.

They also said the transactions were marked "friends and family".

So, I have no idea how long this takes or how it turns out, but in the meantime my bank account balance is $2,345.00 short of what it should be, which sucks big time.

Has anyone else had this happen and if so how'd it turn out?

I don't see how I'm responsible for this and seems like PP should replace these funds.

Thanks!

Ouch! Good luck! I hope it's resolved quickly.

Interesting to find out how this goes.
I deleted my PayPal account when their legal team showed both incompetence and dishonesty around changes to their user policy.

That's why my PP account is only tied to my credit card . No other bank data exposed . Last year I did have someone hack a payment , my dispute was resolved in a few days and my account was credited the scam amount . Good luck 👍

Paypal does not offer the security measures of a bank. Caveat Emptor...

Same here, and I have a very complex and secure password.

I wasn't sure if I could do something like that but seems like a good idea. I will look into - thanks, Rick!

I know usually a credit card company will catch something like this before you do, they are so good at it.

This is the very first time in over 25 years something like this has happened to me.

Is your PayPal account tied to your bank account? Or a credit card?

I think if you only purchase things, you can tie only to a credit card. If you ever sell anything through PP (receive payment) I think you have to have a bank account. I have a bank account that I don't use and has <$50, so that's the one that I linked to my PP when I thought I was going to sell something (still will, just postponed). For all purchases, I use my CC. I think the above info is correct, but I'm a relative PP novice, so maybe there's another way around the bank account link.

My daughter told me that she got a separate Credit Card for her pay pal account, one purposely given a low limit.

It’s a criminal organization. Not a bank, you can’t get anybody on the phone, etc. They screwed me out of money, almost 20 years ago. I keep telling people but the pull of them is so strong people use them anyway. They also own Venmo.

If you guys saw what I have seen re: PP's security and compliance....

It's safer to light a cigarette with a greasy Zippo in a dynamite factory.

You need 2FA, I have that set up on any account that can somehow burrow to my financial info...

Paypal: 2FA and a credit card..

Amazon: 2FA

Venmo: 2FA

My bank: 2FA

Etc..

Google Pay one my phone: 2FA, and I direct it to Paypal, another 2FA .. yes it takes a bit of time checking out from the supermarket.. and I sometimes get some stink eye...

Knock wood...

^^^ What is 2FA ?

2FA

Always wary of CC and ID fraud, I've been a victim 3 different times. 2FA on all my accounts, so far so good. With the e-pay services, I set up a dedicated online ALLY Bank account with a $500 balance. Alerts are set up for all activity over $150.00. Nothing is linked to my real bank account.

I never wanted my Paypal account tied to a bank account. Paypal has an option where you can have a check mailed to you rather than funds deposited to an account.

Thanks for all the replies, thus far...really appreciate it!

I don't know why I didn't think of doing this earlier, but I called my bank and had a nice conversation with one of their CSRs.

She offered to submit an inquiry/dispute to PP on my behalf and we decided to wait until Monday to see if PP gets it resolved first. I have my doubts but she said not to worry - they have considerable influence and should be able to get things resolved for me.

Will post updates as appropriate.....thank you all again!

Big banks are pretty near the top of the food chain for a lot of stuff. If it's one of the big ones, they get stuff done (or can if they want to).

My dad had same happen to him recently. Notified PP and his bank and money was replaced within a few days. Didn’t get the specifics but it worked out ok. He did involve his bank. I’ve been using PP almost daily since the beginning…25 years? Never had a single issue
