One can bolt-modify a lot of stuuff, however, anymore passing SMOG would be a problem in a lot of states?

One has to consider the longitude if problems at resale too?

There is atleast one with an LS swap in town. Very incredible performance.

Bolt up to Porsche trans?

Hmmm...Interesting. I wonder if early Caymans have similar compatibility.

I wouldn't touch the 1.8's or the 2.8 or 2.7 V6's (too finicky and have to deal with turbos). The non-S4 V8 would be a great choice just for the torque and ability to ditch turbos...

Resale value would be the cost of the powertrain.

Alternatively, these things are sold at a loss. Same with jet boats.
