PCI Certification?

Hi,

Quickbooks keeps sending me emails saying all of their user must be PCI compliant and of course has teamed with a third party who for a fee will help out.

Can anyone tell me what is required to become certified or if I even need to be.

I have a very tiny llc and Quickbooks is who I invoice through, so I never take credit card info. I don’t keep address, have passwords for customers or deal with medical or SS numbers.

People email me and tell me what part or repair they need and I fix their tool or send them a part and then bill through Quickbooks.

Thanks for any info- Google search just confused me more!

I usually get an email from my Data processing company with a link to fill out a questionnaire about how I handle customer data. after filling it out it certifies me as compliant. Is intuit the company that processes your customer credit cards?

I have to do this every year or so because I have credit card/debit terminal.
It has nothing to do with anything else as far as I know.
Doesn't cost me anything.

If you are using them to process credit cards then there is likely a fee charged to you monthly if you aren't compliant. I have to do the cert every so often and don't pay anything for it. It's just the cc processing company doing a scan and you answer some questions.

Intuit can go **** a diseased goat. Get a bank to do your cc processing.

I can’t tell you how much I hate Intuit, but having them do the invoicing, meant I never had to deal with knowing anyone’s CC info. So they aren’t just processing the cards, they are doing everything with the cards and yes they charge for it, but worth not having the hassle/risk.

Now that they are online and charging probably ten times as much as it used to cost by buying the desktop every several years.

I seriously may go to a ledger book and bill through PayPal. I do so few transactions, like 4 a month.

So, for you guys who are going online and answering a few questions, do you have a link of where to go or is your CC processor including it as a service?

It is through my data processing company. I use a local banks services... That way I have a person I can talk to if I need help, and I am more comfortable with my customers data not being sold by one of the companies that tries to get your business with cheap prices.

We do NOT use QuickBooks for our CC processing. I have the desktop version, and all my data is stored on my computer.

When installing QuickBooks it asks if you will be taking credit cards. I told it no, and I don't have to use a super complex password, and I don't have to change it if I don't want. They never bother us about our computer security. In 40+ years of using computers I have never been hacked or had a computer virus, worm, or rootkit,

I do accept credit cards with Square. They have no monthly charge, just a percentage of the sale. About the only time we get a credit card payment is from government projects.

I just print a PDF of my invoice, and email the customer. They just mail me a check, or they can do a ACH bank transfer to our account. If we have a customer that we know will pay with a CC, we just pad the invoice a little.

the best thing anyone can do for their small business is untangle themselves from Intuit products. desktop was fantastic. great payroll function too. the online stuff----****ing garbage. i am so glad i can count the years i have left in public accounting on two hands and intuit is a large part of why i can't wait to be done.

Tell us how you really feel. lol

I have the 2012 desktop version. It does everything I need.
An associate started a business and used the online version for everything. Printed cheques etc., as well as the payment processing. I guess she didn't do the math because the cost was off the charts. She said it was just easier .....

You don't need to be PCI compliant, the services you use for payment processing need to be.

If Quikbooks is processing your payments via credit cards etc. it's in their hands, not yours. That's an upselling bullsheisen money grab for 'value added' service.

Good to hear that the old desktop version still works. I had to go to the online version as they have stopped supporting any of the desktop versions and if I wanted to use their invoice system I had no choice.

Starting to think I will go back to using my desktop version and then send PayPal invoices to customers and manually enter the payments.

Oh, for sure, I think I will ignore the emails and see what happens.

The email does state that even if they are doing the invoicing, I still need to do whatever to get compliant.

the deal is if you are not pci compliant the processing co adds a charge to your monthly bill (on top of the % they take). On mine it might be around $60-$90.
