Hello Everyone,
I’m here daily but have never posted in this forum yet and could use your collective advice.

I had my 2014 991 into an independent glass shop for a new windshield today and just received a call that the tech damaged the VIN number plate.
My question is what do you think the long term ramifications will be. How can this even be properly repaired.

Going to pick up in a couple of hours and want to be prepared.

I would ask the local Porsche dealer how to proceed.

Tough break. As noted, maybe ask the dealer. If a repair is possible, you will want them to do it.

On a positive note, the VIN is in multiple places on the vehicles.

Here's how I'd proceed.

Ask the glass shop to send a picture of the damage
Send the picture to Porsche dealer for an opinion.


Go from there.

You might need a rental if the Porsche is out of commish for a while.
Insurance could come into play if you need a rental

The shop has ordered a new VIN plate from the dealer.
I wouldn’t think that would even be possible without proof of ownership?

I think the avenue to take is for the dealer to do the tag swap so that there is a paper trail later in the event that someone were to question it.

That's something I've never seen before.

I'd probably ask for the broken pieces too, so they could travel with the paperwork, just in case.

So did they hold off on installing the windshield until the replacement VIN plate arrives?

I imagine they used a wire to remove the windshield and caught the VIN with it?

When I was in university, a friend had his dealers license and we used to buy stolen recoveries, repos, etc. and several times with a Porsche, we had to replace the door jamb VIN because it was scratched off or similar.. We used to go to the Porsche dealer, show ownership and they would order a new one. I don’t know if that’s still possible.

All that 'stuff' can be ordered from Poland...stickers, replacements for damaged/faded VINs etc.

No they called me and informed me of the damage after they installed the new OEM windshield.

It will eventually all have to be redone.

They are idiots.

I would also talk to the local police and DMV

What are the cops or bureaucrats going to do? That would be a very slow and painful self inflicted wound.


The advice given here has been spot on. Has the op reached out to the dealer?

I had a windshield guy screw up the dark in a GM truck I used to have in a similar way and then deny it when I noticed it…

Get it replaced at the dealer and forget about it. They will have to replace the windshield again.
