The guilty pleasure that is Rebel moon 2
Wow... Never had I ever seen a movie that was so "pretty" in terms of scifi /space ship stuff...... and at the same time so incredibly stupid and poorly written. OMG the writers...
Quite the paradox there... Take a look anyway On netflix because the baddie ship stuff is gorgeous (reminds me of Captain Harlock if some remember), the "light sabers" fights look better than star wars and make Count Duku look like an incompetent swordman, the action is *very* well filmed with slo mo when needed... You will need to completely ignore 30 minutes of wheat harvesting (WTF?) and more painfully, each "hero" summarizing his individual story and reason to be here.. I mean who write this crap ? but again, so pretty !!! Quick summary of Movie #1: Feel free to skip it entirely, honestly, it's not as pretty and twice as dumb, if possible... A space empire powerful enough to make star destroyer class ships (but more steam punk, again very pretty) apparently cannot grow wheat. Also apparently one village on an entire bleeping planet makes wheat !!! Heroes refuse to handover wheat to the hungry nazis. Main hero goes on a quest to gather helpers, who somehow all accept to join for absolutely no reason whatsoever, so they add a Jedi lady, Conan the barbarian and some other folks... The end. Movie #2: The baddie returns with his Nazi filled pretty ship. The Amish villagers somehow defeat them all despite the fact they could have been bombed from orbit and ended the movie right there. Total dumbf%ckery but.... every minute not spent with atrocious story telling (or harvesting wheat) is an incredibly pretty battle scene and nicely designed robots, ships, weaponry, I mean it's just pretty... It's netflix, use the FFWD. Oh and that ship shoulda caused a nuclear winter crashing down... Yikes - I should rewrite movie scripts. |

I would describe Rebel Moon as spectacle over substance. Zack Snyder is like a high school version of Denis Villeneuve, Ridley Scott, or Stanley Kubrick. He's got a visual style that is stunning all his own, but the storylines let his movies down. Still, he's way better than most. Rebel Moon is a Seven Samurai or The Magnificent Seven in space, except not engaging.
I thought there were beautiful and amazing scenes in both parts. ![]() ![]() I liked Jimmy the best in Part 1 and had high hopes for him in Part 2, but was sorely disappointed. They voice the robot with Anthony Hopkins and barely used him? My favorite scene from Part 1 where Jimmy changes sides. Love the side shot in this: There will be director's cuts of both parts this summer that are an extra hour long each. Hopefully it will come together better then.

Pretty much what I said but more polite ;-) Give the man a good story to shoot, he is very good at filming action and the visuals are a-ma-zing.

Zack should cede the writing to those more capable instead of thinking he can handle it. Hopefully, the reviews on both parts will convince him of that and he can do greater things.
Hindsight is 20/20, but Rebel Moon would have been better as a mini series.

This has *always* been his problem. When people were wailing and moaning about releasing the Snyder cut, I was puzzled. The guy was infamous for his bad storytelling with great visuals. It was all you heard about with Sucker Punch. I don’t understand why people keep acting surprised when his movies are bad. He’s an award-winning DP sitting in the wrong chair.

Needed much more Jimmie.
Suspend every ounce of reality and just enjoy the show. It was decent, to a point.

It sucks that the story seems to suck so much. It's keeping me from watching.

The Director’s Cuts are much better, but an hour longer each. It should have been a series and the length would have been a non-issue. I didn’t enjoy the extra gore in this version, but it was spectacular. The extra Jimmy was very good.
