Another damn cat

A few days ago Gabby showed up on our door step. She is a small gray female, very friendly and knows her way around a house. She acts like she has lived with humans.
Vicki was again thinking about getting a house cat, but 2 minutes after we let her in the house she was on the kitchen counter - so she stays outside. She is scrawny but kind of fat in the belly and I assumed she was pregnant. We took her to the Animal Shelter to have her checked for a chip - nope. A vet tech there said she is not pregnant (WHEW!) Called the vet and got an appointment to have her spayed. We have her picture up on both of the local FaceBook sites. If she doesn't belong to someone and no one wants here I guess we have another damn cat. We now have 7 (count 'em) cats hanging around outside.

She's a pretty girl. At least you won't have a mouse problem. Probably also won't have any snakes inside the house.

We have 13 hanging around our property that we feed. All spayed/neutered. Its funny how they can all be spayed but sometimes a random will just appear.

We live on 5 acres so its no big deal, but I will say that we have a zero rodent and snake problem. Our neighbors also have a bunch, but for the most part they tend to stay on their lot and are also spayed. Its definitely hard to turn them away when they show up hungry. I guess I'm too soft lol.

Right now we have Elvis, Elvira, Elton and Paul. Paul is a an opossum my wife says thinks it's a cat. Such is the life in a rural setting. We constantly have cats coming and going.

I'm too soft too. When I thought she was pregnant I called a vet friend of my and asked him if there was anything to be done. He said pay for a spay/abortion (weeks long wait for that, plus $$) or wait until they are being born and drown them as soon as they come out. They'll never know what happened. I was steeling myself for the chore of drowning newborn kittens when we found out she's just fat.

Nope, no way in hell that I'd have been able to do that. I'd have had to have those kittens fixed when they were old enough.

We've been here in the country for about 4 years. I think we've always had a cat that I assume is one of the neighbors. We used to see one, then some guys working under the house found that one. Then we'd see another one. Most recently, I've seen a third one. I assume they don't last long around here.

She's a very pretty girl, for sure. There are a few cats in our neighborhood that I think belong to families here but seem to roam around a bit. There is an orange and white one that is pretty big that I see from time to time in the backyard. The kids think it lives under my storage building. I was out in the building once a while back, and it poked its head in the door like it was going to come on in but saw me and took off. There is also a black and white one around here as well that my kids named Utters. I haven't seen Utters in a while, though. Come to think of it, I didn't see a single snake around here last summer. Maybe the cats kept the population in check.

Recently had my two garage cats put down. Almost 20 years old. One was blind and the other stopped using the litter box. I would love to get more cats but they become children to my wife. It’s also tough when one disappears or has to be put down. I do have more rodents this year.

Yeah, I know. I'm pretty soft hearted. David said when they are first born and still wet they aren't aware of much of anything. For a cat that would have to live a rough life, he says it is the most humane thing you can do for it. Still, it's a hard thing to contemplate.

We have a bite from someone on the local Facebook page.

I’d love it if a cat showed up at our doorstep. I’m allergic but I need help with a rodent problem on our property. We have a lot open space around us so there are all kinds of small animals roaming about. I haven’t seen a start cat anywhere though probably because of the coyotes. I wish those predators would go after the rodents instead of the pets.

We have several foxes that live in our neighborhood. So no rodent problems, including stray cats.

Gabby has a new home!! A nice couple wanted her, and took her home this afternoon. I finally found a good use for Facebook!
