Odds of death from asteroid strike are greater than many things people usually care about. Big numbers/effects but vanishingly small probabilities make risk assessment really fun "out in the tails"...

If these are for sure not going to hit Earth, then why do I have to be on "alert"? Even if it was going to hit Earth, what good would it do for me to be on alert?

If earth does get hit by an extinction-sized meteor,
