Movies where the first wasn't the best?
There's the thread about cover songs that are better than the original.
How about movies where the sequel (or any movie that came out after the first) was better than the original? My vote, Lethan Weapon 2 was better than Lethal Weapon. Joe Peschi's character, Leo Getz, was a great addition, and Mel Gibson's love interest was a lovely addition as well. I thought LW2 was the first one. I'd mostly forgotten about the first one except the scene where Mel Gibson goes on the roof and jumps with the jumper.

An argument could be made for Mad Max and Star Wars....
But not Jaws and certainly not Alien......

I'm assuming we're talking about sequels and remakes? That's fine- there's not a whole lot of either, anyway, especially remakes.
The Godfather Part II is generally considered a sequel better than the original. For sequels, I like 2010: The Year We Make Contact to be better than the original in that it's more approachable. I like Blade Runner 2049 as much as the original. I like The Equalizer 3 better than the first one, but just barely. I like the 2011 English speaking version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo better than the 2009 original (which is still good).

I wish I could cast a vote for one of the versions of A Star is Born as there are four. 1936, 54, 76, 2018. I saw the 76 version.
The 1982 The Thing vs the James Arness 50's The Thing is a no brainer. Forget the 2011 version. It was weak.

Alien vs Aliens? I could see there being some folks that wanted to argue that one. I honestly couldn't say without watching both back to back.

Here's one that may get some knickers twisted. The Maltese Falcon is a book. There have been 4 adaptations. My favorite was the first made in 1931 which is NOT the version with Humphrey Bogart. His is good, but I prefer the first which was pre-code.

The 1982 is outstanding, a classic for sure. The earlier version is also very good. They are like 2 completely different stories, but if I had to rank one higher, yeah, for sure 1982.

I'd have to agree with this even though I'm biased having worked on T2.
I'm going with a few screwball comedies. Paul Blart Mall Cop II was better than the first, and Daddy's Home 2 has become one of mine and my Wife's must see Christmas movies.

Agreed, but they I think they cut that off right before one of my favorite bits.
(video starts at the 1min mark. His delivery was excellent)

Dune 1984 and I haven't seen any of the other Dune movies, but I'm sure I'm correct on that.

The Bourne movies, the first three were very good, but I think the second one was slightly better than the first.

The Dark Knight, better than the first. Mainly because of Heath Ledgers Joker.

I'd wager Ray Harryhausen would have a little something to say about that.
Even though T1 is a fraction of T2's budget the production value is sort of comparable. James Cameron is such a good director that both just suck you in.
