Habitat for Humanity furniture, household goods, and wares donations?
Waiting on a call to be returned - in the meantime - anyone here do this?
Wondering what's involved. I want to donate most of the stuff from Mom's house. Thanks!

When I last attempted a donation years ago I was shocked they had zero interest . They wanted new donations . Maybe that has changed .

My experience is they are very picky about what furniture they will take. For taking a lot of stuff, Salvation Army is a better bet.

It really depends on the local organization.
I volunteer a day a month at the local HFH doing their books and records. Easy stuff. They are very good here and seamless in terms of what they will and will not accept. Just go see them and get a sense of what they can do. There are also a lot of “vintage value” places here that will generally take what HFH may not accept. Lots of options to sort through. As others have mentioned it can be daunting. Best of luck. |

Another option is to call an Estate Sale company who does buyouts. They will empty the house for an agreed upon amount. If you want, take that cash and donate it.

And stay away from Goodwill. The CEO of this 'charitable non-profit' rakes in a cool $1/2 million per year salary

I'd suggest you just leave it out by the curb, but knowing you you'd drive back by and pick it up!
![]() Maybe if you go the estate sale route or sell some you can donate to local Animal Shelter in Mom's name. How you holding up?

Here we have a mission which is a homeless rehab place / thrift store. They are less picky than any other place around. Free on the curb is a good option but you have to advertise on fb because if it sits too long it will get rained on then you are left with ruined junk.

I've taken some things to Habitat For Humanity ReStore. As long as the furniture is in good shape they'll take it.

They take most furniture/appliances up here and give you a tax receipt for the value of what is donated.

+1 for the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store near you - Walk in and have a conversation about what you have. They will be up front about what's useful to them and what's not. I even found a few deals there for stuff I needed.

Many folk want to 'donate' stuff that belongs in the dump.
I've never had a problem with the local HFH Restore taking anything I brought them. I appreciate how they offer people a 'hand up instead of a hand out'. The recipients have to work for them to be able to get aid for themselves.

When we moved my mom out of My parents house, we talked about an estate sale and a few other options, but we ended up taking what we wanted (I didn’t take anything) and had somebody come in and take everything out of the house, lock, stock and barrel. What they didn’t take to sell, they took to charities that they worked with.
It was a stressful time, not so much for me because I was six hours away, but my two sisters were worthless and my brother carried the day. Good to hear you’re doing OK, Baz. |

That's my wife
![]() My mom's still alive but we're clearing out her house since she's in assisted living. My wife wants to keep everything! She thinks everything is a valuable antique! We pull stuff up on Google and most of it can be bought for $5 or less.

Once again....THANK YOU for all the suggestions and comments and regard for my well being with the broken rib.
I just got off the phone with Albert from HfH and we have a pickup scheduled for next Friday the 11th. He will call me to confirm the day before and then I will get a call from the crew when they are on their way. I went down the entire list of items and the only ones he said they wouldn't take is the China Hutches (there are 2 of those) and the Armoire (part of a matching set from the master bdrm.). That's fine with me because I wouldn't mind hanging onto those items myself and could always sell them on my own. I started boxing stuff up last night and also did some today. Lot of things go through your mind during this process of course but all good - maybe bittersweet is the right word. Thanks again all! ![]()

We have a place in Opelika called the "Restore," and they came out this morning and picked up my Bowflex Revolution. I hated to let it go, but I haven't really used it much, and nobody I knew had a place to keep it. My brother-in-law gave it to me a few years ago, and I tried to give it back to him, but he said he wouldn't use it. The wife wanted the space it was taking up in our laundry room and I was tired of fussing about it so I finally caved and said let it go. Live to fight another day. Lol.
Sorry you are having to go through all of this Baz. When my grandmother passed away we donated some things, kept some things and then had an estate sale to expedite things along. Sent from my SM-S916U using Tapatalk
