There was a period where I was working solo flipping cars and I would stop in a Just Desserts shop in SF and have a slice of german chocolate cake with a nice french roast coffee and work on the crossword puzzle in the newspaper. I would immediately crave doing it every day and did so. The desire was strong, but if I quit for 3 days or so the craving would disappear. It was an on again, off again little addiction.

I don't have a sweet tooth. They are all sweet. If it was up to me, I think I would be OK. I can go through a grocery store and not buy sweets. But if the wife buys sweets, or asks me to buy sweets, I can't NOT eat them. If they are in the house, then I eat them.

Probably ~15 years ago I got a check-up where my cholesterol was in the mid 200s. Someone here on the board posted a book by a medical Dr that said that the issue was that our diet has too much sugar in it. EVERYTHING these days has sugar unless you make it yourself. I think the book said something like "100 years ago, the avg person consumed 2# of sugar per year, but today, the avg person consumes about 75# of sugar per year." (I don't remember the numbers for sure, but it was something crazy like that). I was eating 3-4 pints of ice cream per weekend (my weekends were 3 days). A pint (or possibly 14oz) of ice cream was a single serving as far as I was concerned (and that was a smaller serving than when I was younger).

That's my problem, too. And I used to drink far too much soda. I'm not a "I'll just have one once in a while" kinda guy. If it's in the house, I'm gonna eat and/or drink all of it. So, it's not in the house anymore. Haven't had a soda in years and sweets (of any kind) are EXTREMELY rare.

Same I can easily avoid buying them, but if we have them I am powerless. Problem is I have 3 small kids and I feel like I may get turned into child protective services if I don't buy the occasional cake or whatever.

My son looks at a coke like I look at a Carrera gt. An exquisite forbidding thing. I don't want to give them a bad relationship with food.

Struggle is real.
