Fernando Valenzuela has Passed

Shocking.

Such a loss of a great Baseball Legend.

Even though I was a kid, I still remember Fernandomania. RIP.

He was the LA Dodgers pitcher at the heart and soul of the Dodgers of teams of that era. I never saw him pitch, but right after i graduated College in 1981 I had the great thrill of attending Game 4 of the World Series between the Yankees and the Dodgers. The night before, Fernando had won the game and essentially turned the tide with the Yankees winning the first two in the Series. The Dodgers went on to victory in games 3 through 6 and win the Series. The feel of the time, the immense excitement went all the way back to the 1978 series where the Yankees had, for the first time EVER lost the first two games of the World Series and swept games 3 through 6 to beat the Dodgers. It was exciting times. RIP Fernando, so sad.

Sad news. I remember him in his prime, it was awesome.

I lived in El Paso 2010 - 2012, his son played for the El Paso Diablos. Spitting image of the old man. First base IIRC.

As is typical for the type of man he was, He was doing Spanish broadcasts for the Dodgers until a short time ago.
His style was something to behold. He would look up into heavens for divine help. Fans would then cross themselves when he did that.
Rest in peace and Godspeed

I love Baseball.

MLB was immeasurably better when men like Fernando took the mound.

I wish I had seen him play in person…the Artful Dodger.
