I think they did a pretty good job with retro tribute styling, but I’m out on the EV thing. I’d rather take my $60k and buy a restored original Scout.

This is not a helpful attitude for the greater economy, but I’d rather buy a used Cayenne or X5 with cash and save the remaining $40K. Even though I think the Scout is nice. New cars/SUVs just seem so expensive.

I drove an original Scout in the late 70's that belonged to a friend.
It made a VW Beetle feel like a race car. |
^ I had a coworker who owned a 70's scout.
This was in the early 2000's. It was working great. She took it into a mechanic to "go over it" and change anything that might go bad (since it was a bit old). To help out, he preventatively replaced the plug wires, but didn't insert them into the distributor all the way, so that caused feedback which blew the ignition. I took on the perfectly working truck (turned basketcase) out of pity. All I can say is this- It was the most dangerous truck ever. While diagnosing the problem, if the engine cut out when running, it lost ALL braking and most steering. Most cars I've driven might lose power to the brakes and become numb in braking, but not all braking. The truck was so dependent on engine vacuum for brakes it was easier to jump out of than try to stop when the engine cut off during motion. Jumping out was made easy by that cool bikini top/convertible feature when the hard top was off. In short- Engine running. Brakes work. Engine cuts off for any reason- No brakes at all. I Still liked it though! :) |
