This is the second time this has happened. The first time I felt the bulge in the wall and my hand blew through what was left of the Sheetrock and exposed some angry yellowjackets. I got stung twice. This time I recognized the bulge in the ceiling and covered it with a piece of plywood. Drilled tiny holes through the wood and ceiling and injected Spectricide. That wiped out the nest. Cutting the ceiling open is very creepy since I had no idea if I got them all or not.

Kill it all. Wear a respirator with carbon filter or something rated for chemicals.

And open all the screened windows for a week.
Put on a fan blowing through the house. Sleep downstairs.
Pay $20 or $100 extra for the month's heating bill.

Yellow jackets are not wasps to my knowledge.

Most wasps and insects are good and they eat bad insects.
Even yellow jackets can be docile when enough food is around. I was recently surprised.

There is a food source nearby + a pathway inside the house.
Seal up the perimeter with foam.
USE 3X LOW EXPANDING DOOR/WINDOW TYPE.

In the early 90s, I was stung about 15 times by yellow jackets. Ever since then, I have been deathly afraid of being stung.

If that was my house, I would burn it down.

"Kill them with fire"...

I live in the Sierra Nevada foothills. My house will burn eventually.

Yikes. May be time for a pro? We had a problem earlier this year with yellow jackets getting in our basement. I could see them coming/going from a seam in a window well and tried to treat it there but it didn't work. I didn't know where the nest was or where they were going. Had a guy come and treat the house. We found a few hundred dead ones in the basement for a few weeks after and then none. No problems since.

Sheesh, what the hell? I remember your other thread. Do you know where they are getting in? I would want to figure that out and spray all around the house.

We live in a 100 year old farmer built wood frame home that's about as air/critter tight as a loose sieve. About twice a year, I spray all around the outside of the house with Demon WP. I spray ~18-24" of the yard, up to the bottom of the walls (pier and beam), around all of the doors and windows, under the house where the crawlspace is easily accessible, and any place that I think bugs might get in.

We still get mud daubers in the house (I think mostly newly hatched young), and the occasional other critter, but that seems to mostly kill everything off and keep it out. I don't mind the mud daubers too much (would be happy if they didn't get in) since they are solitary and unlikely to sting compared to a paper wasp that's protecting a large nest.

This is happening in my guest house above the garage. They are getting in where the blocking doesn’t completely seal the area between the droid rafters. Second story and hard to access. I’m going to try to put some expansion foam up there as soon as the weather gets colder and the bees/wasps go dormant. If I never post again then I fell off the roof.

We all need to trade our step ladders in for podium ladders.

^^^^ I don’t remember how many times I have stood on the top of a step ladder. I didn’t think twice about it. Nowadays, I need to rest my legs on the top and first step down, for bracing. Or I will fall down. : /

Crazy how our balance deteriorates . If I’m walking and turn my head to see what’s behind me I get slightly dizzy after turn my head forward. Old age. Kinda sneaks up on us.

Plenty of wasp and hornet extermination attempts gone wrong on YouTube... You have to be on your game or they win!

Bugsinrugs 10-31-2024 12:17 PM

Not saying I’m an expert but I have only been stung twice when eradicating two nests. I hope I won’t ever have to deal with this again but these yellow jackets seem to be more prevalent than in the past.
