Boxster Project
There's a project for sale near me. Boxster (1998) in a container. Original 2.5 engine w/trans, and a 2.7 engine.
The car looks to be in good shape, aside from a fender, headlight, and bumper missing. It must have had a minor collision. It's only $3k, I'm thinking I can't go wrong getting my money back if I decide to build a track car or a summer driver. I need a retirement project for next spring. Yes? |
Yes!!!!!
You can sell the parts for a lot more |
Totally.
It will be a lot of work to make a 2.7 e-throttle work in a cable throttle car. But if the 2.5 is good you could sell the other and almost break even right there |
What could go wrong?!
|
Boxster is a great chassis . The 2.5 is low on hp but a good momentum car . Make sure the immobilizer under the drivers seat never got wet . That can be an expensive repair . IMS is a wear item do a search there is tons of info out there . AOS is something to keep an eye on , an inexpensive manometer is your friend there . Bore scoring can be an issue it's hit or miss .
Drop the sump and see what's in there , hopefully not much . Borescope from the sump to inspect the cylinder bores . If all good reinstall the sump and change the oil/filter . Then find twisty mountain roads and go run her hard and enjoy that mid engine handling . |
I think I will go ahead. It's in a storage unit that I can extend until spring...
I will need a Cayenne after, to round out the collection. |
For that price and you have the time. No brainer.
As mentioned, great chassis. The 2.5 5 speeds are a hoot to drive. |
I had a 2.7 Box, really enjoyed it.
|
secretly the non-S boxsters are just fantastic little street cars.
|
comes down to what your time is worth...........always good to restore and breathe life into the dead, but what's your local market for a drive-it-today boxster ready now? near me you can get Boxsters for $8-10-12K all day long. Add a few more K and you're into a Cayman or box S territory.

The debate will be what engine I use. And if it's even a Porsche engine... |
I am the new owner of the 98 Boxster. It is high mileage (160,000) but the body and underside look like they've never seen rain, let alone snow/salt. Cars like this are very rare in the north, it was too good to pass up.
I'm going to make 2.7 5-speed car out of the parts this winter. Full suspension rebuild, resealed engine, and new seats. I will probably drive it for a year, then sell it to someone wo wants to build a track car, or who wants a decent summer convertible. I'm excited to get going. I got the seller to pay for storage for November, so I have some time to store my summer cars and move this into my shop. I will post some pics in a few weeks. |
Pics or it didn't happen 😀

I have the car now, with a 2.5 engine plus 5-speed trans, and a 2.7 without a trans.
The 2.5 engine is no good, bent valves. Moving on to the 2.7 engine tomorrow, it has compression at least....if it's scrap then I'm probably parting everything out. :( Pics tomorrow. |

If it's trashed I will look at other options. There are Honda and Audi retrofits that work. I don't think I want to squeeze a V8 in there. But if I go that route it will be something with a lot more HP. A Honda 4 cylinder sems 'wrong'. But I'm open to other options. |
