Huge Lithium fire

Did anybody see that huge fire at the lithium recycling plant in Fredricktown, MO ? The plant was reportedly the largest plant of its kind in the western hemisphere. Luckily all employees got out safely.

They at least have a good evacuation plan. Now they need to work on a safety plan for the processing.

Yikes.

Wow !!! Glad all got out safely . Hopefully environmental impact can be contained/minimized .

Why did the fire department spray water on the fire?

Seems to me a place like that should be built below ground level with an enormous tank (or several) on-prem that can be used to flood the area where the batteries are.

Probably because that's all they've got. I've read about EVs taking 25,000-50,000 gallons to extinguish (for one car).

No concern about environmental impact? Really? Oh yeah…we’re saving the planet.

Seriously, "shiet happens" should not be the go-to phrase.

Yeah, that's a biggie. We usually just have them on buses around here. Small stuff :(

Well, the use of AFFF would have turned the area into a superfund site with the pfas entering the local water table…

thingmon 11-02-2024 02:38 PM

A company I used to work for lost a site to a drum of LiIon batteries… Some politics involved but the drum was supposedly the culprit that started the ball rolling.

That part of the operation was Fred Flintstonish. The waste compressed gas mgmt operation there was a little more high tech. Interesting stuff. Got involved with the permitting the new site.

Reclaiming gas given off by a buried land fill site?

Tobra 11-03-2024 02:47 AM

Wondered about the foam, WTF do you do, bury the fire in sand and make glass.

Fun fact- HF will etch glass
