Can a cop add to a ticket

Got pulled over in the 930 by Barney fife for get this. Not using my turn signal (3 times).
It was a little side road behind a gas station and a neighborhood and no one was as around. He was sitting In The parking lot.
Any my question.
He “cut me a break” and wrote the ticket for not using my signal just once. After getting the ticket I said something like you sure are being petty over a signal. Or something along those lines.
Well he threatened me to write the ticket for all three times.
Can he add or alter a ticket after the fact. Seems like double jeopardy to me.
I realize I will get picked on by the small minded because of the car.
Too bad he missed me sideways pulling out a few minutes ago. I might have gotten shot

john70t 11-05-2024 03:34 PM

Three incidents. Three potential tickets. I would guess.
But you could argue he was only able to physically witness one and falsified the others.
He could have gone for the throat with speeding reckless etc.

Slow 'er down son and say 'yes sir'. Not in the city. Insurance probably won't notice the extra p-car tax.

rwest 11-05-2024 03:36 PM

I would imagine he could, double jeopardy is only that you can’t be tried twice for the same crime, you hadn’t been tried, just charged.

...and you know better than to make a snide comment to a cop, never going to make things better for you.

herr_oberst 11-05-2024 03:42 PM

So, if I read this right, you're sideways in your car, a few minutes later you get pulled over and ticketed for a much lesser infraction, and even given a break on that one.
If that's how it happened, my heart would have been pounding when the gumballs filled the mirrors and I would have been thrilled to not have to deal with an unsafe acceleration ticket.

I don't think I would'a been giving any lip to the cop as he walked off. I wouldn't have said thank you, but I also wouldn't make him regret his decision to cut me a break.

Tobra 11-05-2024 03:49 PM

I would have spoken to his boss the next day

Aurel 11-05-2024 03:55 PM

South Carolina may be the issue…here in MA you can drive 85 in a 65, switch lanes without signaling, and nobody blinks an eye.

thingmon 11-05-2024 04:21 PM

Call the ADA. You’ll get cash bail for sure.

stevej37 11-05-2024 04:29 PM

Every cop is different.
I've been pulled over in my Carrera while blatantly speeding and had the cop say "very nice car...take it easy with the speed"
But I'm always as nice as can be when they tell me what they pulled me over for. Never piss off a cop.

Shaun @ Tru6 11-05-2024 05:08 PM

So you’re saying you’ve never seen the Chris Rock video.

Gogar 11-05-2024 05:28 PM

Hell yeah if you make him mad he can keep on slamming them out. Then you have to make an extra trip back over there to fight it and miss out on something important and probably lose anyway and pay extra and for him it's just another Tuesday. He knows it. Hell yeah it's petty and dumb, you're right about that.

No matter how freakin' stoopid I've ever been ...

Stoopid minds must think alike ... it's worked more times than not .... a LOT more :D

To the OP......

Soooo ... just what were you thinkin'?

Errrrr .... nevermind ;)

masraum 11-06-2024 04:34 AM

Never talk back to a cop. Best practice is "yes, sir," "no, sir," and "thank you."

They would not add to a completed ticket, they'd just give you another/new ticket. They can keep writing them.

DavidI 11-06-2024 04:54 AM

Yes, the officer can add to the citation and can get very petty. The Vehicle Code book is huge with very small print for all of the offenses. You'd be surprised how many violations almost any car can rack up. There are "supplemental citations" which are second and third pages for citations as well. Sorry you received a citation. Someone above replied advising you to call his boss, which I presume means file a complaint against the officer. Most field law enforcement officers wear body cams and your interaction most likely was recorded. If his/her behavior was other than professional, that may be your outlet; however, the citation will still stand.

The best advice I always give is be civil when dealing with officers and fight the allegations in court. If you are factually correct, you stand a great chance of winning.

Good luck and drive safely, David

Treat the police respectfully and be polite - that will get you out of 90% of tickets; trust me. :)

Smart ass in a Porsche.
Ya, you'll win this one. lol

Exactly.

Why in God's name would you even hint at effing with a police officer?

Jeff Higgins 11-06-2024 06:41 AM

Be nice to those guys and gals. Most are great people, doing a crappy job that most of the rest of us would never want anything to do with.

Last guy who pulled me over, a motor cop going the other way when I was on my Ducati, wrote me for 52 in a 35. Sounds bad, but this was on a very, very lonely country road with no driveways, cross streets, schools, monasteries, playgrounds, nothing. Not a single vehicle went by the whole time he had me on the side of the road. Did I say "lonely"?

We wound up b.s.'ing about motorcycles, his kids just starting out learning to ride, my kids who (thankfully) never showed any interest, etc. He asked me about my old Ducati, I asked him how he liked sitting on a BMW all day (he really liked the bike), and on and on. He finally said "I gotta go". I reached out, shook his hand, and thanked him for being out there for us.

When I got home I emailed a copy of the ticket to my traffic attorney (along with payment) and never heard another peep. I still see the guy hiding on the side of the road every now and then, so I wave. He waves back.

If you make three turns without signaling, the cop might have grounds to think you never signal.

Why is it petty?

Mike80911 11-06-2024 10:45 AM

I would imagine it depends on your states VTL. He could definitely write you 3 separate tickets for the 3 offenses. He could also possibly alter the original ticket but that would be a little difficult to explain in court. He would have to list the direction of travel and the exact spot each offense occurred he cannot simply say failed to signal 3 times. You might have been better off if he did it might have voided the entire summons. One of my pet peeves is not signaling for a turn I don't understand why it is so hard for people to just turn on their signal. I have to admit I wrote quite a few of those tickets in my time. You should get a bill from a repair shop for fixing that broken directional the very next day and explain to the court that you did signal but the light was broken

911 Rod 11-06-2024 10:51 AM

if there are left only turn lanes and a line up of cars in it do you guys signal?

Sorry. I meant right turn lane. Like exiting a highway.
Yes you should have your signal on in a left turn lane.

oldE 11-06-2024 12:43 PM

I say "yes" to turn signals. Usually I can tell by the changes in velocity or trajectory of the vehicle ahead if they intend to change lanes or exit the highway, but I also find it happens more frequently that someone looks like they are about to do a change, then they jerk back into their lane. I suspect they are inattentive and suddenly remembered they are supposed to be driving.
Keeps one on their toes!

Yes...without even thinking about it, it's a habit.

I also find myself using my right blinker for an exit on the x-way.
I don't know why, I disappear from traffic not causing any slow down.

A930Rocket 11-06-2024 05:51 PM

If you’re driving by yourself, and there’s no traffic, do you still use a turn signal?

I use my turn signal, but could be better.

Yup, I have made my turn signal usage more of a robotic movement rather than something I put thought into. There just isn’t a downside to using a turn signal, so why have it a mindful process?

Besides even if you think no one is around, maybe someone snuck on the road in your blind spot and seeing your signal could avoid an accident.

Same thing with my seatbelt, just a habit I don’t think about- I’ll buckle up to drive out of the garage- not because of safety, just habit.

I'm a selective signaller ... nope! Seat belts, etc. are automatic .... buy I only signal when needed.

Yeah ... I know I ain't right ... but signalling to change lanes on an empty road.... nope.

I speed every time I drive ... mebbe 10 over.

I try to be safe .... and nice to cops.... because ...

I AM A FISH in their barrel :D

I've never owned a BMW. :p

However, going back to the op, I have been stopped about ten times in 5 decades with two tickets. If law enforcement had been around on hundreds of other occasions, I would likely have a lifetime driving ban. Don't argue with the person trying to get through their shift.

A cop, who was a friend of mine jokingly told me, he could write a ticket if a car traveled just 50 feet. That is power. I would never talk back to a cop. Ya just going to make him madder.

Years ago, when my oldest was 18, he was pulled over for a traffic violation, he told the cop if he could hurry up because he had places to go. My son could never hold back his mouth. He received 3 more citations. Did my son have a learning moment? No but that is for another OP.

Through my friends at the highway patrol, I have located actual footage of the incident . It does not look good for you

I am always polite to the cops.
It just irritated me that he actually wrote me a ticket instead of a warning
For a turn signal when no one was around and it was a side road behind a gas station and I new why he was doing it.

I pulled out onto hwy and kicked it sideways a few years ago and a cop was way behind me. He caught up flashed his lights then kept going.
As said. Got stopped doing 100 in a 30 and even passed a car with solid yellow and he let me go.
Most cops are good guys. Then you have ones with small d****

It was the being threatened to write more for the same offense that iquestion.

Depends on the mood of the cop. Regarding your issue, my guess is yes. Your word against his personally I would just take whatever and say thanks officer, have a nice day.
