An easy siding question
 

It took some oomph, but I got the damaged siding off. Now I have a couple questions.

• Do I need to run the wrap under the J channel, or is up-to-it okay?
• Do I need to use Tyvek, or is roofing paper okay? Now it has roofing paper with a second application of some kinda foil paper over that.

I appreciate y'all putting up with my neophyte questions.

I wouldn't bother with tyvek, unless you are residing the whole house. Especially since most of the area is ventilated anyway (the attic I assume). roofing or siding paper is fine. However a quick look at Hdepot a small roll of housewrap is about the same price as a roll of roofing paper
With the big roof overhang, I wouldn't be too worried about tucking the paper under the J. Just use tyvek tape.

Is the awning going back? If not, the area of concern would be the J-channel or flange over the windows & door.

Thank you for your reply. The awnings are going back up. The front one provides a huge relief from the afternoon sun. In fact, that awning is laying next to my house. I'm hoping it can be reused. The other one landed about 1/4 mile away in a ball.

I agree with dad. I think tyvek may provide better water proofing and will let the attic breathe some.

In an area prone to high winds I would secure everything behind well attached accessories, like your j channel. Having said that, is that the original siding I see exposed? If so, is it in good shape? If that is still providing your primary waterproofing, then what you put over the top should be able to breath well. The original siding should have a vapor barrier behind it and by introducing another one may be overkill.

Are you doing this yourself Dixie? If not I would think a "siding guy" would have a partial roll of something. For the 10 minutes it would take I would remove the j trim and put it back on top of the barrier.
Maybe just use the old siding? Looks in good shape. What was once old is new again kinda thing.

Yes, I'm doing it myself. I've had plenty of contractors and guys I know say they can do it, but they don't. I think the issue is my job is just too small.
