Brain trust question: Route maps?
 

I am looking for a way to make a specific route map. Actually several of them. And something anyone can load from a QR code onto their cell phone, either Android, iPhone or whatever.

If you have ever been on a group tour, sometimes a red light will catch you and the group can't stop to wait without causing a traffic jam and mad drivers going about their day.

Google Earth makes great maps, but it is always trying to find the fastest route, not the specific route we want. And Google Earth only allows 10 way points in a section of the map.

As most of you in PCA have heard, Porsche Parade is coming too Oklahoma City in July of 2025. They want four tours as a base, and two alternates to choose from. All of those have a leader, and a sweep. So two volunteers per tour, and there are four days of tours. Many of the tours are split into multiple groups to keep the total number of cars in one group down to 25 cars max.

Anyway, do you know of a mapping tool to make a specific planed route, and NOT the fastest route, but to specific roads, that anyone can load. And when they stop for a comfort, the map will continue from that location to the destination?

I'm a 'puter luddite, but perhaps take photos of actual maps with the route marked, then give hard copies to tour participants? Believe it or not, but not everybody has or wants a smart phone. Sometimes old school works best?

The vast majority of the people attending Porsche Parade have and use smart phones. We can print out the map route, and have those ready. But if a driver has no passenger, they have a tough time driving and reading an analog map. That is why it is so easy for people to scan the QR code, and have the map load up on their phone. In my antique 85 911, I have a Blaupunkt Bremem that looks right and proper in the dash, but I just open the little flap that looks like a cassette slot and there is a USB port. It plays the music on my phone, and the voice directions are heard over the car stereo. It is really nice. Most of the cars on a tour are the new fangled models and the owners are computer and phone literate. The air cooled cars are a minority now. But lots of the folks in the new 200K+ cars come and admire my classic analog 911.

Couldn't you just use Google Maps?

I've been lucky with google maps.
Don't know how many stops or reference points you can have per route.
I save those in case there is no cell signal

Google maps only allows 10 "way points" like turns to specific roads in a row, you can link the different sections. but after 10 turns, it says you have reached your destination, and one must tell it to continue, or it stops working.

I've been mostly successful using google maps, creating maps for pre-lunch and post-lunch. The biggest issue is dropping enough pins or way points so the algorithm doesn't take you off course because of a faster route.

You can then create a link to that map, and easily turn it into a QR code. of course you'll need cell service or wifi at each break to load the next map.

unlike some of the other platforms, it will keep you running even when there's no cell service, you can download off-line maps for your region, and it works on any OS, any smart phone.

I use Google maps for the drives I organize.
10 waypoints is the limit so I usually try to have a stopping point at gas station that has restroom facilities for the other drivers to use and have a second route Starting from there.

Just need to be aware when you sent it the route to a smart phone it modifies the route to be the most efficient so you have to make sure the map does not have shorter alternate routes between way points.

I tried scenic but that app does not allow you to modify the route on the fly and if you miss a waypointe it keeps directing you back.
