So the completely "mechanically-functional" hardware has been disabled by software? Remotely? Internationally?

That is the very Definition of a Virus.
Remote computer sabotage using Federal FCC networks.

This happened with my Cannon printers. Two of them actually.
Fully functional before and mostly new.
I received some message like "This product is out of it useful cycle and has been discontinued" or some nonsense..

I preferred that company's products before. Probably won't ever buy it again.Yeah. I won't.

The problem was that the bad updates were crashing computers!
Their new releases were making users the lab rats. If your computers doesn't crash then we know the update is O.K.

I still have a copy of "Windows 386" or Window 2.1 on 5.25 inch floppy discs. It came with my first mouse back in 1988.

It would be hard to hook up that serial port to any modern computer. Notice, it says Patent Pending.

I wonder how many mice have been sold since that era.

I bought a new refurbished NUC that already has Windows 11 for a OS but have been procrastinating moving everything over from my old NUC, with which I'm still using Windows 10.

Tonight I purchased MS 365 Personal, which provides 1 TB of cloud storage.

It's my understanding I just save everything using One Drive and then download it into the new NUC, right?

I will still have my old NUC in case something goes wrong or I need to access something to get the new one set up correctly.

Shouldn't be too big a deal, right?

I also have a couple external HD's holding most of my stuff so that provides some safety so I won't lose anything.

Try Win 11 Pro. I notice no games/fluff.

Install Windows 11 Enterprise and there will be no fluff.

Installed from a separate license. Dell/HP/et al pop their own crap on the Windows OS.
