Sleep meds & addiction?
Soliciting y'all's take on this, especially from those with a medical background.
My best friend told me she now has to go through a psychiatrist to get the two sleep meds she takes (Ambien, and IDK). She was ticked because the psych cut her dosage in half suspecting my friend may be addicted. The psych also kept asking if my friend had been abused as a child, which further annoyed her. While I'm quite sure she wasn't ever molested, I do wonder if she's addicted. I suspect her insurance flagged the dosage, or having two prescriptions. Plus, I've never heard of anyone needing a psych to prescribe sleep meds. What's y'all's thoughts? I want to be appropriately supportive.

I'm not very good at sleeping. So to get a reasonable nights sleep I have alcohol + Promethazine (Phenergan) + CBD oil.
Good luck to her. |

Been using melatonin for 15+ years, works for me. It just helps you tip off to sleep, it won't keep you asleep. That's what the liquor is for.

I used to use a concoction of CBD gummies, Xanax and Ambien.

My daughter works the 12 hr. night shift @ the hospital. Her doctor got her similar meds for sleep aid and she recently got advised by her doctor a pysch had to get involved in the prescription for insurance company reasons.

Eminem was addicted to them sleeping pills and went to rehab.
Health Ledger was too, but his cocktail was more fun. Ambien sucks as bad as a cvt Bruce Jenner. For example, it slows the mind down to nothing.

Perhaps get a sleep study to see what the heck is going on without "better living through modern medicine" answers.
Especially when "modern medicine"needs to be doubled/tripled up on. "If the first two or three meds aren't helping, ask your doctor TODAY about adding med #4......" Or not.....(Michael Jackson sarcastically comes to mind). Good luck. Ron

Melatonin used to give me freaky, sometimes violent dreams.

Benadryl or similar antihistamines work great. Ambien seems way overkill for sleep.

Not to doctor shop, but maybe it’s time to try a different doctor? I would think a GP or shrink would both be able to prescribe sleep meds.
I take two meds and melatonin. I’m a terrible sleeper and if I don’t take meds, I wake up repeatedly throughout the night. And when I do wake up, my mind starts racing and I can’t go back to sleep. Then, I’m not only tired I feel like ****. I see my shrink every three months to discuss what’s going on and my sleep. I’ve tried CBD to no avail. I usually get up after 2.5 to 3 hours. Figure I'll go and pee, then drink some water and go back to bed. Pee and repeat.
Ambien doesn't work if your mind is active. I could take 1 and still up after a couple hours, take another, still up and then take another.

I use a geltab Kroger version of unisom and it works for me. I used to take melatonin but as stated before, melatonin helps you fall asleep but doesn't keep you asleep and I needed something that was going to knock me out and keep me asleep.

I suffer from what lots of you guys do and especially old people - namely wake up around 3AM & not able to go back to sleep. I started melatonin thirty years ago and have used it off & on since. It sort of seems to help with getting to sleep. My doc prescribed Tramadol years ago. I used it to manage my sleep. If I had a period when I wasn't sleeping, I'd take one before bed and sleep through the night. My current doc cancelled the Tramadol (said there was danger of it stopping your breathing) and prescribed Trazodone. I use it to help getting back to sleep if I wake up at 2 or three, since it's good for about 3 to 4 hours. Taking these meds judiciously has allowed me to get back to some semblance of a good sleep pattern. I only take it if I wake up in the middle of the night and don't feel like I'll go back to sleet or when I've had a couple of poor nights.

I have awful jet lag. My body wont give up the old time so im nauseous with vertigo and brain runs at 1/5th speed. Squinting shuddering zombie.
Melotonin ive tried over and over and it doesnt seem to effect me. My friend (not a dr) gave me some ambien. Half a tablet when i want to sleep, i wake after 3 hours and take another half. Im into the new time zone in 2 days now. Its not good sleep but wow is it better than the alternative. So i asked my dr for some when i travel and he gave me a prescription but he cautioned me not to take it on the plane. Apparently it shuts off some part of your brain and one can become wildly inappropriate. Well… i need to sleep on the plane so i take it anyway. I think the stuff makes me feel weird and id never take it for more than 2-3 days but i really like it for jet lag. Ps: in india you can buy it over the counter and its like 50 pills for $3 but… wow did it give me a bad chemical hangover -yes worse than the jet lag. So stick with our blue ribbon highly refined domestic product. |
