‘Calming rooms’ for special needs kids

This is horrible. Unreal. Given the under funded and under staffed nature of school care for autistic and mentally disabled kids in the US we should be on alert for anything like this. Have not heard of such rooms here myself.

Have you ever dealt with an autistic kid when he is off the rails ? The public school was in no way prepared to help with my son, who is super intelligent, but he is " off"
They didn't lock him in a safe room, but more or less, discarded him . I remember this every time I pay my school taxes . Huge modern stadium remodel, remodeled and added on to the entire school, yet cant find the funds to handle kids who don't fit in the " box" .
Gotta get them off to college asap, there is no other path..

You've got my vote! When my wife taught (33 years) she would despair over the curriculum advisors and periodic changes to materials that the department was spending funds on, when what they needed was smaller classes and assistance to deal with the kids that now had to be included in their classes.

Unfortunately, back in 50's and 60's there was very little understanding about Autism, ADHD and other special needs kids. They were treated like "retards". I have ADHD and the school thought I was a "slow learner". It took me a couple decades to figure out why I processed information differently and how to deal with my ability to focus on what I was needing to do. There was no help back then. I am blessed to be able to use this "disability" to my advantage in sales.

Like others have said, if you weren't 'normal' you were either drugged or just blown off.

As far as the current school systems are concerned, they are just a business. Get the money from the gov't and then use it for management. The students are a product to be used for money. The teachers that care about the students burn out from frustration. Home school your kids so that they can get the attention they deserve. There are great programs that customize to the student's learning style and speed. You also don't have to worry about the agenda of some teachers (PARF).

Another brick in the wall. The public schools just tried to push our dyslexic kid through. Went on for 3 years. Hired a lawyer and got kid in a school for dyslexia 7-12th. I tell anyone that will listen. Get a third party opinion, and get all correspondence from schools in emails. I’m not a big fan of public schools.

Sometimes punishment works out OK. I was ADHD as a kid before there was ADHD, so was always getting disciplined. Once we were having a performance at the school auditorium. I acted up in some way, and the teacher made me stay in the room during the performance as punishment. The program featured some dancing ladies. I heard a noise from the area of the cloak room and went to investigate and found out the noise was ladies talking in the room next door. There was a door that opened into the room but it was locked, so I looked through the key hole. The ladies who were doing the dance presentations were in the room changing clothes as they would finish a performance and prepared for the next. I saw the whole thing. Never told anhone though - just kept it to myuself,
