Chevy S10 hood won't open - help please
So I went to open the hood on my 1998 S10 this morning to check fluids and it didn't " pop " open . The interior handle to open the hood feels loose or no resistance . How the heck can I get this open ?
|
Take out the grill. That will get you access to the latch.
|
I haven't looked at it yet as I have appointments to get to . So the grill can be removed with the hood down ? The bolts/screws are all external ?
|
Yes, its not that hard to do. After that a few 13 mm bolts will get the latch off.

University of YouTube is your friend.

I like to grease cables, even if they are in a sheath and ostensibly di not need it, or graphite
|
If the issue is with the hood latch pin spring, the hood can unlatch but not "pop" up. Have you physically pulled up on the hood?
|
My 94 the grill is held in with screws. Your 98 snaps in. Sort of tabs lock into slots. Be careful the old plastic breaks easy. Once the grill is out it is easy to take out the 4 bolts that hold the latch in place.

My 1996 S10 did this.
I got a friend to pull the handle and I stuck my fingers in a lifted the hood. |
This, or hold the release handle open with a small pair of vice grips, then grab a corner of the hood, and pull up .
30 % of the cars I work on do this, and the hood does not release on its own . Also, MAKE DOUBLE SURE, that the hood latches once you close it again . This is how hoods fly off |
Why would he need to remove the latch? It is a problem with the cable, start at the handle inside and see if it broke there. If so, grab with pliers and pull. If not there, remove grill and pull cable with pliers there.
This isn’t rocket science, guys. |
Problem resolved . I had my wife pull on the hood release handle while I pushed and pulled on the hood . Took about 30 seconds and it opened . Just like the video posted above that spring on the cable end was messed up . I was able to open the clip and pull the cable end out .
I lubricated the cable and latch assembly and put it back together . I tested it twice and it opened as it should . So I think it's good to go . I appreciate all you guys giving advice , it was very helpful . Thank you SmileWavy |
Maintenance is everything, people. Not just oil changes...latches, handles, you name it. :)
